When I was in HS, I went to a tech school class: Electronics. A lot of the students went on to do soldering of electronics for military applications; so they taught us about soldering rather extensively. The instructor told us never melt solder on a joint, let it cool, and re-heat it to connect the wire. He said it causes cold solder joints. Better to use a "third hand" tool, and heat the wire and the solder together; so the rosin will properly coat the joint without getting cooked away.

The true cause of cold solder joints is movement of the two pieces being soldered while the solder solidifies. Eutectic solder helps as does ensuring the pieces don’t move as it cools. A third hand can help for sure.

@@SoundSleuth That is another cause. In this case, when the rosen gets burned off, it will work fine at first; but without that protection, over the months and years, it will oxidize faster.

I'm doing my first build from largely JLI components, this vid is a great resource, thanks!! Do you have any experience with the JLI103 capsule? I wonder how it would compare to the TSC1.

@@SoundSleuth Thanks for the reply! How would you describe it compared to the TSC1?
@SoundSleuth
@SoundSleuth 7 ай бұрын
@@badmiddens It is similar in the fact that both are center terminated. Check out the response graphs on JLI. THere is a subtle difference. The OPA circuit is extremely flat and low distortion. So you get what the capsule gives you.

Great documentation and set up. Thank you! I picked up a couple and am in the process of building. The TSC-2 capsules that I received don't have the backplane wire attached (just the front and back diaphragm wires). It did include a separate (unattached) blue wire with a small eye ring that I presume is supposed to take its place. Should this wire be installed with the mounting screw (making electrical contact with the side of the capsule)?

Great stuff as usual Jules. However, why make the same error low end mic manufacturers have done for decades? K67 with flat circuit. It's just not meant to be used in a flat circuit, and is greatest contributor to "China sound" or "harsh" atributes. That capsule has way too much going on at 10k, and it's very audible, especially with cymbals.
@SoundSleuth
@SoundSleuth Жыл бұрын
Actually, I am not looking at that as an error. The OPA circuit is flat as you mention. It also has really low distortion and less noise than a FET in the 10K and above range. The capsule does have that boost. You can easily EQ it in post if you are not a fan. With that said, all the drum in the video are with the Samantha and the TSB-2555B capsule.,

@@SoundSleuth in that case I'd include the typical de-emphasis curve of say u87 with the kit, so that end user can easily get there. Random eq moves in edit don't usually address the specific capsule curve adequately. Cheers! 👏

@@BUPETA3351 I kind of felt the same way you do, but I have built quite a few microphones usings Jules circuit and have compared them with multiple microphones and Tube Microphones. All I can say is I poopooed this capsule at first glance and I am talking about the 34mm capsule, well I tried it, and it does not have the Cheap distorted over Hyped sound that you are probably used to. Does it sound like the K47 capsule, no it does not, but with the sound that people want to hear in recordings now, it fits the bill nicely. Really smooth response and not Harsh at all. Is it the Capsule being used or the Circuit? Hmmm, maybe a little of both as I am no expert, but my ears don't lie. I have used this circuit with the c12 style, the K47 style and Advanced Audios K67 capsule, and every one of them have their own unique characteristics and sound Amazing. I have compared several Chinese circuits to the Alice circuit and the Alice circuit always has a bigger thicker smoother sound and super quiet, with a ton of headroom and nice sensitivity which also helps to make it quieter. I am sure Brad at JLI will work with you if you wanted to try another capsule, but not sure I cannot speak for Brad, but he is SUPER easy to work with.

@@McdowellBaptistChurch-js2pn I agree 100%, I have no issue working with k67 in a flat circuit, as I know how to address them. But in a comercial product like this what are the chances an average DIYer would know the difference between the different capsule types. I just say it would be nice to have optional switch for HF filtering, or sell the kit by default with a capsule without, or with moderate HF boost.

You can use most 34 full condenser capsules. The JLI-86U is really good edge terminated one. If built four mics with them
