To be fair, most native English speakers are not only monolingual, but they also often don't know the grammar of their own language. I mean, the fact that they often make mistakes like mixing up its/it's, use apostrophes to pluralize nouns, etc. is already sad enough.

@@Shijaru64 Most of those problems are due to how few people read novels for leisure. Reading books really helps with grammar and vocabulary. I stutter, so my oral fluency is always a bit sketchy!

I have never left a comment on YT in my entire life, but I had to let you know that as a Japanese I was absolutely flabbergasted by your unbelievably masterful command of the Japanese language. I don't think I have ever heard a foreigner speak it so well. In fact, you speak it much better than I do on every single level: pronounciation, vocabulary, prosody... and I really mean it (100% 本音, not 建前 !). I'm currently learning Russian so I know all too well how much talent and effort it takes to be able to reach such an impressive level of competence. here's my tips! 1. Learning the alphabet (depends on the language) 2. Familiarize some easy and usually used vocabularies 3. Be immersed in grammars because they're kinda complex 4. Watch series or movies! & Listen to music or podcasts 5. Read short stories preferably kids stories 6. Speak even it doesn't make sense at first 7. Review and be consistent!

All good tips. I would also say try to find a consistent native speaking partner who can help you not only by having conversation but who can correct mistakes for you while you’re conversing so that you can internalize those improvements through application

I like to listen to an unfamiliar Japanese song and then try to write the lyrics while listening. After that I look at the official lyrics and check wether I understood everything correctly and used the right kanji.

One thing I noticed about foreign Japanese speakers on KZbin is that they're hiiiighly self critical of their language skills, which is albeit strange, but also understandable. Japanese language is a very hard language to learn for western learners, so there's a great deal of technical learning attached to it and you can't really slack off in areas and still be good. Kind of like math - you need to know the previous step thoroughly to be able to do the next. On the other hand, I personally I don't strive for "perfection" in languages. I want to be able to speak and write a language professionally, and I want to be able to pronounce and talk close to native, but to me not sounding EXACTLY like native speakers doesn't really bother me. I speak 4 languages now and it's a part of the charm to me, to sound a bit off on certain things.

It's a cultural thing. You do not show off your skills in Japan, and in fact lower them so you appear humble. She knows she's incredible but she also understands and is following japanese cultural norms. Anyone who says they have good Japanese or are 'fluent' may have studied the language but are completely missing the cultural of side of things. That's why you'll see people downplay their abilities. I lived in Japan 10 years ago for several years and the culture became such a part of me that many of these aspects are still a part of me today.

Totally agree! But even my Japanese friends all think they speak terrible English, even though they have no issue communicating at full speed with a native speaker. I’m always impressed. I hope to get that good at Japanese :P also it’s a shame that people see their own accents as a flaw. Like you say, it’s part of the charm, and there are many benefits and things to be proud about keeping an accent too. I would love to see a video of accents speaking fluent Japanese, be that regional dialects or foreigners. As it can be quite hard to hear accents in languages that you are not familiar with.

WOW, what beautiful Japanese! :O And great tips! One side note on shadowing: I was taught to do this a little differently in language school. For shadowing, I was taught to press play on an audio, and then immediately, without hesitation and without really thinking, copy what they are saying right as they are saying it. Rather than listening to a whole sentence and then stopping and repeating it, I was taught to speak half a beat after the audio. It's supposed to help your mouth get in to the rhythm of speaking without your brain getting in the way. It's pretty intense and takes immense concentration! It really helps most with pronunciation and inflection. You can do this with anything! News, while watching a movie, or with JLPT study materials, etc.

Indeed, got taught the same shadowing technique! I think it only works well if you have an ear for the language though. Otherwise it’s just a mis mash of sounds that never make sense how many times you try.

@@shumpzz That’s fair enough, but of course she isn’t Spanish so it’s more impressive. Also, pronunciation isn’t just about being able to pronounce the sounds. A perfect pronunciation also includes pitch, tone, (lack of) emphasis, where in a sentence to take breaks, etc. That’s what I thought made it so impressive that someone (presumably a native speaker) said her pronunciation was perfect, after just a year in Tokyo.

Japanese learner here, I started learning japanese because I loved the language, the culture, and nearly everything to do with japan, and it is true that you need to really like and love the language and wanting to learn more than having to learn, but I think this is not enough tho... Yes, the more motivated you feel, the better, but also, I would recommend to not set your expectations too high, you have to realize your learning a way of communication, its never going to be easy, because no matter how much you like it, they're complex, so realize that you need time and patience, and also, do not feel discoureged when you see people learn to speak a language in a ridiculous amount of time, theres plenty of videos of people showing how they speak a language in 3 months or similiar, each person is going to take a different amount of time to get to learn to a certain extent, and thats ok!.. btw I do not speak japanese by any means, Ive barely started!! I just thought its crucial for people not to feel desmotivated or discoureged for not being able to communicate yet in a certain language! good luck to all!

As a native Spanish speaker, pronouncing Japanese words is a little easier for me especially when it comes to d’s, t’s and r’s (both languages roll the “r” similarly). I’ve been studying Japanese since 2017, but I stopped for a while,and now, after months that I’ve been studying every day, I started too feel frustrated because I just keep revising things I already studied instead of studying new ones. I also feel like I don’t know where and how to start again, cause I used so many sources and it’s all mixed up in my head. N1 in three years is really impressive! I have N2 and I often also realize that a lot of grammar that you learn becomes passive knowledge instead of active knowledge and I wish I could have a wider speaking variety. I don't know how much preparation you did for this video, but it's really very fluent, proper and easy to listen to. I'll do my best for N1! Kanji are just so hard!

my tip for checking pronouncation : record urself talking, and hear the original one. and fix that mistake + watch some anime / other japanese content for pronouncation and listening well usually I listen to seiyuu content tho

6:13 I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone who’s just starting out in Japanese. Immersion is a really really great method, but to make immersion much less painful, you’ll need a basic foundation. Also, I oppose what she said about immersing without subtitles (when you’re starting out). Use JP subs when you watch a movie or anime, to help it become more comprehensible. 以上だ。Other than that, I pretty much agree with almost everything she says.

完璧な日本語ですね。素晴らしいです！ 語学力を高めるにあたっては、やはりその言語を好きになるというのは大事ですね。同感です。私の場合は英語を勉強するときに映画など見ても何言っているか全然わからないことが多かったです。日本語なんかと違って省エネな喋り方をする、そういう音がする、ということを知らないと全くわからないものだ、また、言語によって文字(スペル)と発音に乖離があったりなかったりするものだ、ということを知ってからはフレーズとして覚えるようになってきたので、理解も進みました。 特に日本語は母音も子音も少ないので、phonetic alphabet など見ながら音をよく聞いてシャドウイングするようにしてました。

not only is your pronunciation perfect, but your use of words is perfect as well. its one thing to pass the n1 exam and its another thing to actually be able to understand and properly apply what you've learned i forgot to write what I actually came here to comment: your proper use of japanese, like keigo and phrases are very natural and sound just like a native japanese. natural keigo is so hard especially when you haven't grown up in that environment and being able to grasp the knowledge shows how intelligent you are
