I always thought people who used it would be comparing things. Actually aren't they? Because you wouldn't need to use this grammar at all if there was only one (logical) possibility, right? In the first example, if there was only one child you wouldn't use 対して.

A better translation here is ‘with’. She is angry with him. She is angry towards him isn’t the way we’d say it.
