Well, maybe this could make them feel happier: in my town there is every year a fair where everyone can bring an attraction. An old man (who I think worked for the railways) brings always a giant train set that's always the biggest attraction for children and young teenagers. There's always a long line to drive a train (you get the remote of one train) for 5 minutes (they used to be 10, but then the waiting became terrible, so the cut down the driving time).

Video games are an easy purchase for parents, and they can be stored away in a cupboard easily. I'd much rather have some trains (which I do now, thanks to having my own income), but as a kid I didn't really get video games either. I usually asked for Lego, since there was usually a set available that was always within budget, but I think my kids are getting trains or slot cars, even if they're girls, and that's that.

I was at a model railway shop once and I heard this complaining that he saw a gauge 1 train at a convention once that had two coaches with the same number on it. Even the shop owner was like "and why is that a problem?". I think it's way more fun to have fun with them like this.

What I particularly love about this is (not to speculate if John Snow is well paid or not but he's a high end TV presenter so would assume has some spare cash, so) despite having the extra income, his layout is just a basic green painted baseboard with some tracks and he's absolutely delighted with his layout! No fancy flashing lights or automated technology, just a basic train set!
@MrWolfSnack8 ай бұрын
Based on the staining to a lot of the diorama and layout I suspect he started this as a kid and made a very sophisticated setup and can't or doesn't want to mess with it. It needs a lot of TLC and could use some decorations.

If you are devoted to a hobby you will find a way to make it work. There was a guy that built an entire sunroom on his house to put the nose cone of a Concorde inside. That's all that it was for, just to show off that one plane part.

Just a man enjoying his trains, that's how it should be. The hobby has gone in a direction where modellers are too obsessed with making sure every blade of grass is how it should look and the coal in that engine's bunker looks realistic. If some people want to do that then that is okay but it shouldn't be all the hobby is about. People need to realise that pursuing a high level of perfection comes at the expense of time, skills and money and not everybody has all of those things at their disposal.

I’m planning on converting my layout to DCC once my parents agree to. If only people wouldn’t generalize and say that every railfan loves Thomas. I’m 16 and 1 of 2 people in my high school that knows anything factual about trains. I know I shouldn’t take it personally, which I don’t.
@Frserthegreenengine3 жыл бұрын
"If only people wouldn’t generalize and say that every railfan loves Thomas". I totally know that feeling. It's bloody annoying to be constantly associated with that blue tank engine when most of us are into the more serious stuff. When you get older Thomas does become more of an embarrassment. Even recently some knob teased me of liking railways and told me to "go back to my Thomas toys".

lol I love it when teenagers try to dismiss and de-generalize "kids shows" as they go into their 20s. You should never do that, and you will come back to it. I'm 31 and watch Thomas episodes all the time. Classic Thomas, not the CGI crap.

It's not. It depends on what your goals are. I like O scale. I bought a rusty old Lionel set with tons of track in a big wooden trunk at an estate sale for $85. It spans the entirety of my two car garage when I had it set up once. It took me 8 months to de-rust all the track and get the engines clean and shiny. I do not have space to display such a massive set but it is enough to last me my whole life, and all I have to do is look for train cars and engines I like. I have an idea to make a big fold-up layout that I can set up and put away as needed but not built it yet.
