I'm glad you did the "longer" version with the entire drum solo, even if it still isn't the full version. The second organ solo is missing here. The full version is about 12 minutes. You can find it on YT but only as audio without any footage.

Played with everyone from the Rolling Stones to Steve Winwood to Todd Rundgren to Sammy Haggar in Hagar Schon Aaronson Shrieve. Shrieve also became a well-regarded film composer, including Apollo 13. In addition to solo work, the past 10 years he plays in a jazz fusion band in Seattle.

Santana's 1st album was still 2 weeks from being released so nobody knew who they were on this day. They did leave with 400,000 new fans tho!! Wonderful performance and reaction. Also need to do Joe Cocker's Woodstock performance of "A Little Help From My Friends". His backup singers couldn't get to the stage on time so his guitar players had to do the backup vocals! Joe's performances are always amazing!

Carlos Santana said most everyone in the band had taken LSD just prior to this performance. Santana said that he was hallucinating that his guitar was turning into a snake and was all he could do to control it! Lucky us....What a Great Live Santana footage. Just great. You absolutely know Santana when you hear him, there's no mistaking the Latin sound in his playing. He had a huge song in the 90s called "Smooth" with Rob Thomas from the band Matchbox 20 singing on it. Worth checking out for sure.

But his best music came after his first 3 hard rock albums, when he became spiritually awakened....and way before "Smooth." His albums: Caravanseri, Barboletta, Welcome, Oneness, Moonflower, Festival - especially the instrumentals were his finest works in his career. His music became transendental, intricate fusion, depth of a spiritual journey. Check it out.

Woodstock Music and Art Fair. The promoters were in over their head and called Bil Graham to come help and he said he was bringing a band he managed to perform in exchange, Santana. Over time Santana has employed 70 different musicians but not all at once.

Drummer Michael Shrieve is 20 years old. They thought they had 6 hours before they go on so they took some LSD/Acid. 22 minutes later this happened, they were all TWEAKING on LSD/ACID. Carlos said his guitar was a Snake in his hands. AWESOME.

The "dude on the guitar" is the legendary Carlos Santana, with Greg Rollie on the cosmic Hammond B3 organ and a 20-year-old Mike Shrieve on drums. The fact that Carlos plays guitar solos for the ages here is even more remarkable because he was tripping out at the time on LSD and he said the neck of his guitar looked like a rubber snake!

They weren’t supposed to be on stage at this time; they were scheduled for later in the day, but other groups that were supposed to be on were stuck in the huge traffic jam that half a million people developed. So they were pushed on the stage. Which at the time their acid trip just kicked in just as they got on stage.

As far as I am concerned this was the best lineup that Santana ever had: Carlos Santana, guitar and cowbell; Greg Rollie, organ and maracas; Dave Brown, bass; Michael Shrieve, drums; Mike Carabello, congas; Jose 'Chepito' Areas, congas and timbales. The drummer is Michael Shrieve. He was 19 at the time. Carlos couldn't look at his guitar's fingerboard because he had dropped acid before the concert and was seeing snakes crawling all over it.

All of them are on LSD. They took it just before the performance because they were not scheduled to go on for several hours. Some bands didn't make it on time and Santana had to go up. They were so fucking high & they created this masterpiece. They are in the zone smiling and loving every minute of this. Carlos has said this in multiple interviews. The organizers expected 50,000 people...they got 500,000.

Who are these guys???.... Carlos Santana: guitar. Gregg Rolie: vocals, keyboard. David Brown: bass. José "Chepito" Areas: timbales, congas, percussion, trumpet. Mike Carabello: timbales, congas, percussion. Mike Shrieve: drums.... They were paid only $2,500, but gained millions of new fans. Shortly after this time Neal Schon - lead and rhythm guitar (1971-1972, 2014-2016) joined the band, but later left with Greg Rolie to form the rock band "Journey". In his career Carlos has recorded or performed with over 100 artist.
