I want to say this: I appreciate how you said Patti Labelle still has those notes to this day. A lot of people judge her because she is near 80, and they’re upset because she’s not doing the same techniques she applied in the past. I love how you added that in, on top of the analysis as well.

Patti still has one of the best head voices in the game. Regardless of age, it's pristine and so clear. She really doesn't use much of her belting range anymore. I'm not sure if it's reduced, inconsistent, but she really avoids belting now
@Anime56663 жыл бұрын
@@popland1977 I believe that she still has the belts, but she probably doesn’t use them as much anymore because of age. I think it’s better for her to stay in some head voice because she doesn’t need to be belting up and down the stage at nearly 80. When she does her “You Are My Friend” performances, sometimes she does touch on those belts a little, but not too much as to keep the quality there. Just speculation, it may just keep her comfortable, head voice is still spectacular, she can still get to 5th or 6th octave without trying, glissandos are still there-honestly I don’t really think she needs them much.
@popland19773 жыл бұрын

Wonderful analysis! Patti is actually a classically trained soprano which you can hear it in her head voice in particular. She's one of my favourite singers for many reasons but in terms of vocals themselves what I love is she uses her voice to its fullest, it is never a weak or muffled sound. It's always full of tone and clarity. Pure, raw singing full of emotions. She's also got some of the fullest belting I've heard which I just love. I'm not sure how she takes the chesty edge (CVT metal) up to G#s etc. but I love it.

You see and these type of videos are great for people who say that she just yells. I hate it when people say that because it diminishes the technical work of what singers like Patti LaBelle does when she's up there. Is she a Powerhouse.. Of course. But it doesn't take away from the fact that she has technique to be able to do what she's doing when she's " screaming" and that it's not the only thing that she's doing when she's up there. Also I love how a singer can also express themselves outside of doing riffs and runs

Dang thats one fine breakdown of her great talent! You know it so well & I know it as a long time fan....She mostly sings with a lozenge or gum and most often wears a "foundation" (kind of like fitting corset) which may help support that glorious voice. Her interpretation of a song is often louder and "happy" on positive words and softer on down or negative words. Turning a lullaby like this into an anthem for overcoming adversity- resonates with her audience like a Gospel song. She is also so kind to her fans doing so many gracious things you'd never know. The man leading this song Bud Ellison knew "what she was thinking" and led the band to enhance and not step on her song while getting larger than life, unbelievable performances from her! When a whole audience, especially the Apollo's jumps to their feet moments after she finishes you know she sounded FINE. Some phones and TVs could not reproduce it accurately. So enjoyed this- Tom ( every version of my name was taken so I just put in CK's and it took)

She was jokingly wondering if it was real or not. I’m sure it was. Anyway, you are the most descriptive person I’ve ever seen. You have a beautiful voice yourself. The way you explain things is really unique. I have often wondered, and marveled at the human voice, and how it works. I will say this about Patti, SHE GAVE IT HER ALL!! She rolled around on the stage, she ran, and she SANG! Oh my God. Talk about chills! What an experience! I can’t get over how well you can dissect the different aspects and qualities of the voice. thing that has always stuck out, about Patti LaBelle, to me...is her utter fearlessness. Being a so-called "dramatic" soprano, aint easy. And I sometimes wonder, when it occured to her, that she had a certain quality in her soprano, that was pretty different from other sopranos. Because as Jaron said "there aint nobody like Patti". But her fearlessness is the thing that, in my opinion, enables her to do things with her voice, that you dont typically hear at all in other female vocalists. There's the 'baby voice" of hers...then there's the "yodeling" that she's known for..sorta like Nancy Wilson, in that regard....Patti can holler and howl...she can just flat out SCREAM and get away with doing it, because she screams, 'in pitch'. She can growl...and she can run up the scale, like she does on the end of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". First time my folks took me to see her, was when she and Sarah and Nona, were on their 'Nightbirds' tour...here comes Patti, in a skin-tight catsuit...thigh high silver boots...a deep V-cut on the cleavage...silver hair, and a red cape. My jaw dropped, like I had just seen a UFO. And Ive been a fan ever since. And as Ive said to people thru the yrs, when we're sitting around talking about favorite singers, "in Patti's prime, she didnt have a peer that was close to her, sorry". She aint sell records way back in the day, like Aretha, Donna and Diana or Dionne. But when the lights went on and it was time to perform, all them other heffas, had to take a seat, behind Patti LaBelle. I just call it like I see it. She is...one of the all time greats.
