The best thing in the world about Rice Stadium has always been watching the Aggie Band perform there. World Without End Amen.

That was a fun day. Playing against Rice was a real pleasure and I love Rice's irreverent sense of humor. I was marching on the field when the Owl ran on the field and, since we were marching away from him when it happened, none of us knew about it till after the halftime show was over. I still have a picture on my office wall of the Yell Leaders dragging the Owl off the field. Of course we Aggies then drowned out their halftime show with a Yell Practice, just to get even. Good memories.

Why is it that every time I watch a video of the Aggie band there's always some one from some other school bitching and moaning or trying really hard to make fun of A&M?

I was on the field for this drill. And I remember the Rice incident that caused us to be wary of the Rice students and their pranks.

Seriously? UT can put up with Rice's silly jokes year after year. The MOB even makes fun of themselves for cryin' out loud! Just take a joke instead of not allowing the MOB to perform or trapping them inside the stadium. This is coming from someone who could care less about either A&M or UT. Rice's band is truly something to be admired for what they bring to the world of college band. Humor. Being able to laugh at oneself is an ability as admirable as being able to march a great show. Loosen up.

Lol, mass respect for the yell leaders running them off the field. Love some good ribbing during college football.

The Yell Leaders started Yell Practice when the Marching Owl Band (MOB) took the field. It was so loud that their band couldn’t hear themselves play, and they walked off the field.

I was a Rice freshman at this game. Frankly, our mascot made a stupid decision, one that pretty much ruined any sort of detente between the two bands. We made our apology in 91 and even went to A&M in 92. Nearly 25 years after this and 40 after the stupidity of 73, I think it's time to move on.

She was five feet tall and weighed about 90 pounds. Aggies should be eternally proud of their yell leaders; they should play anthems for them and toast their victories as they beat on widows and orphans.

Do you have your '81 Rice show posted anywhere? We've lost our copy... About the whistle thing - a member of that FTAB was at my wife's high school reunion (they went to high school together) and he readily admitted that one rank of trombones just plain messed up, countermarching five yards too soon - it had nothing to do with whistles. I've always enjoyed watching the FTAB perform - they are unique and very, very good at precision military-style marching.

Doesn't matter if you get the MOB off the field. The reaction they got out of A&M in '73 was awesome. The MOB is forever the greatest troll band.
@Neaptide18413 жыл бұрын
In 1973 the MOB thought that calling men and women who were training to defend the country Nazi's, a familiar, repetitive refrain from Rice's student body. While Rice's student body as a whole has found that amusing, most of the rest of the country has a much higher standard for humor. Must admit though, the Rice approach requires less training, less talent and less organizational skill. Sort of matches the personality of the institution. Good drill. BQ, class of 77.

@Neaptide184 You sure? Most Aggie students wouldn't be accepted to Rice.

Sorry, I was at the '81 game - there were no whistles, that was just an excuse - I love the Aggie Band, but one of the leaders just screwed up that day, turned too early, and half the band followed him
@BKWhitty9313 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, and that whole thing you said about them resorting to "classless acts" because they're no good at football or band? That 1973 game with the infamous MOB performance? Yeah, Rice won 24-20.

I don't understand why folks from A&M get so offended when a mascot like the Rice Owl, who is known to poke fun at every opponent they play, mocks the A&M band. In fact, I've never really understood why A&M people in general are so sensitive about everything and feel like everyone is out to get them. They are kind of the Jan Brady of college football in that regard. The Rice mascot mocks the A&M band so the A&M people feel the need to beat her up. Much like the time the A&M corps guy pulled a sabre on an SMU cheerleader. It's pretty hilarious how seriously the A&M folks take themselves.

Kenneth Wilkie I wouldn't say offended. it is just really tacky for the masct to run on the field while the band is performing. That's a very Texas Tech thing to do.

The lengthy description made no mention of the '73 incident, why? It was just good fun: rubber boots, MOB in shape of a fire hydrant, goose-stepping, "March of the Wooden Soldier". Funny stuff, but followed by an Aggie loss - a last second kick return TD at that. Somehow the show wasn't as funny that day. 1000 ags charged the owlies and cornered them in a south endzone store room. Hours later, they were rescued by a delivery truck. SUSPEND THEM FOR A HALF! That is the SEC discipline in action.

@americasnextopm0del13 жыл бұрын
@chauncy817 Seems like anything done against an Aggie is classless. MOB is known for making fun of everyone because they know they can't compete band or football wise, so they use their superior intelligence to get at others.
@BKWhitty9313 жыл бұрын
@chauncy817 Ooooh, u mad brah? They're not supposed to be the best band ever musically. That's not their shtick. They perform comedic, satirical shows that poke fun at anyone they want. Call 'em a "garbage ass band." I think their mission is a success if they got your feathers ruffled.

If I could be forever 20 I'd be Rice (and black beans) all the way. The fact is that they made a very small car and, beyond this, TEXAS A&M kicks their paltry little asses in every way measurable. Houston's "Ivy League" College. Rice. Ha! Rice. The second-weakest part of any Tex-Mex dinner. (And when the beans are Charro [and not refried] the weakest!)

Rice is one of the world's leaders in academics. Texas A&M is a travesty compared to Rice.
@jmpercy8 жыл бұрын
Although Rice may have higher academic standards that appear to surpass those of Texas A&M University in some instances, just remember, academics aren't everything... Since its beginning in 1876, graduates of Texas A&M have played an important role in almost every military conflict or peace keeping mission that the United States has been involved with, defending the freedoms of the people of the United States and those of her allies, and defeating tyranny around the globe. Texas A&M University is proud to have 8 Congressional Medal of Honor recipients..! How many does Rice University have..???
