Text
John 4:34-40
New International Version
34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the Sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
Many Samaritans Believe
39 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days.
Who wrote the book of John?
The author of the Gospel of John is identified in John 21:20-24 as "the disciple whom Jesus loved." Based on internal and historical considerations, it is believed that this individual is John the Apostle, a descendant of Zebedee (Luke 5:10).
Date of Writing: The gospel of John had to have been written, copied, and distributed before the year 135 according to the discovery of several papyrus pieces dating approximately to that time. Furthermore, the gospel of John was most likely written between AD 85 and AD 90, despite the belief of some that it was written before Jerusalem was destroyed in AD 70.
Writing Goal: According to John 20:31, the author quotes the gospel of John as having the following goal: "But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name." John's goal, in contrast to the three Synoptic Gospels, is to demonstrate Christ's deity rather than to give a chronological account of His life. In addition to trying to dispel a myth that was circulating in the first century, John also aimed to encourage faith in others and fortify the faith of second-generation believers. Contrary to a false teaching that said the "Christ-spirit" came upon the human Jesus at His baptism and left Him at the crucifixion, John stressed Jesus Christ as "the Son of God," entirely God and fully man.
One of the Key Verses: John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. . . . And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth”.
Summary
What is John 4:32-38 all about?
Jesus offers us four reasons in John 4:32-38 to say yes to him, four reasons to reorganize our lives, our priorities, and our finances so that we have the time, space, and resources to further his mission. 1. Following Jesus into mission enriches life rather than depletes it.
