To be fair they were joking a bit and exaggerating on purpose and the LOVELY Terry Jones made up for it all by making some wonderful documentaries about real medieval history :)

'1950s medieval' tends to be more accurate in at least one way: they have colorful clothes (if only to show off the Technicolor), whereas today it's the 'Brown Age'.

Castles were rendered and painted many colours,Heraldry was everywhere as we're uniforms and livery it was indeed a colourful time.
