Very good video. I love the red long edge. Great idea, helps you see where the sword's going and what it's doing.

nice interpretation and approach, my only nitpick is that use of the lazy vom tag on the shoulder, not sure how you see that position anywhere in Meyer's longsword. perhaps you see it as somehow connected to zornhut? Anyways nice work, thanks.

Yep, you are right. This guard is unusual for Meyer. This slipped our attention, since Frank's part is only roughly described as an attack to the left side of the head, and the focus on Sven, who is fencing from Tag. Thanks for your comment. This kind is most interesting for us :)

That 'lazy Vom Tag' is a guard that seems to be often used in tournaments and to me it looks like something between a 'Liechtenauer' pflug (=pflug next to the body and not next to the knee) and a 'lazy Zornhut' (=Zornhut with the point over the shoulder but not in the direction of the opponent). The correct Zornhut to me is a Zornhut with the point held in the direction of your opponent so that you can stab him in the face with a 'verschieben' over you head. This way you are able to keep some pressure on your opponent while standing in your guard.

Actually i thinks its closest to how we view the Mittelhut now, which we see in 2 ways now. Similar to both of these positions in PHM secondgenhema.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/phm_longsword_leftft.jpg

Indeed, you're right, I probably missed this because the mittelhut is less explained by Meyer in the longsword book.

It might not be 100% clear from every viewing angle, but actually we are using the flat for the first parry. Take a look at 0:24. Thanks for your comment :)

The advantage is that I see in your interpretation, opposed to mine is that you will gain more momentum (by the flex of the sword) to pull off the unterhau which would explain why he would use a strike with the flat, so I already learned something from seeing your video ;)

I think the text can be interpreted in both ways. There is only one small word "über" which can be translated to over or above, which may give a hint what Meyer had in mind. However I will try to do a horizontal strike next week to get a feeling for this :)

I'm really confused about Frank's foot placement and movement towards the end. It appears that he would be very off balance with his legs contorted like that. Is that in the texts?

Very nice interpretation of the First Play of Meyer, the only thing that is wrong is that the initial parry should be done with the flat of the blade, so that your blade will sweep against your opponents head. If you read Meyer, you will see that strikes with the flat are not uncommon for him. Except for this little difference, nice video, nice work, keep it up. :)

Sorry, you are right, the thing that got me confused is that you are more striking the flat to the top of his head, whereas I interpreted it more to be some kind of mittelhau with the flat but I can see some benefits to how you do it. I need to read the sources again to see what the Meister himself has to say about it. :)

1600? I thought he had only the 1568 and 1570

The 1600 version is a reprint of the 1570 which should be quite equal. I am using the modern transcription which is based on the 1600 reprint, and therefore used this number in the videodescription.

Unfortunately, during free play, wearing a fencing mask and lacrosse gloves will make performing these movements quite difficult. How depressing.
