This species blends in so well on mud flats which they frequent. Can require a good scan with binoculars to spot them.

Glad you enjoyed it, Thomas. As for the music, I especially got a kick out of showing the snipe grooving to its beat.

Excellent film and information as always! Wonderful to see so many snipes as well, must be a great habitat and birding area. We had one yesterday here in Central Park foraging alone & on the alert for a resident Red-tailed Hawk! - Cathy

Central Park in New York City? I'd say you're lucky to find even one, Cathy. He must have been exhausted and forced to set down in a major metropolitan area. We, on the other hand, had an unprecedented 100 of them. So I decided it was time to film them and educate myself about them. I learn with each film I shoot and then pass along what I've learned. Fun!! Anyway, thank you for the kind words.

You packed a lot of praise in quickly, Peter. Thank you. What's so great about this hobby is how much I learn. I knew NOTHING about snipes before I started filming them--and didn't even have space in the script for all I learned that was interesting. For example, when they're flushed, they take off in a rapid zigzag pattern. I didn't have footage to show that, so I didn't mention it.

Yes, I like enlightening people with knowledge, especially since it involves me learning too. I knew nothing about snipes until I started filming them last week. Hey, I've been trying unsuccessfully to get in touch with you to see about partnering on a project. Do you have any footage you'd like to see narrated? I wondered if you'd be interested in letting me use your five year old footage of a Screech Owl compressing his body and expanding it. I remember watching that five years ago and being wowed by it. You could answer me here or, better yet, write me at joalwo7@gmail.com.

Thanks for the video When I was young I hunted and eat every snipe and woodcock and ruffed grouse and quail I could find. For the last 20 yrs I just watch them now and again.Being 60 yrs old I have long ago laid my shotguns down.

Doubt there'd be much quail to find now anyway. Quail numbers are down hugely, mostly--I hear--because farmers surround fields with fescue grasses the babies can't penetrate, and farmers plant right up to the road now, leaving no edging that would contain seeds for the quail.

@@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME Jo,Quail started dissapearing in east Tenn in the mid 1990s.I have heard everything from senthetic soybeans and corn to the grass you mentioned cutting baby chicks legs open and disease sitting in.But when you factor in the coyotes, hawks, raccoons ,and wild hogs destroying and eating their eggs,it's no wonder their nearly extinct .One other thing that the majority of people don't realize is this.Game wardens brought in the coyotes in the very early 80s and released them not caring about how many species they decimate, including baby calves. Then, they spread lies about how the coyotes walked across the Mississippi and on Eastward.Same thing with the wild hogs.Thdy turned them loose, not caring about the billions of dollars in lost revenue to farmers due to destroyed crops,so they could make money selling hunting license.Thats what's these disasters are all about, making money selling license. They even went so far as to introducendifferent species of vultures. What the wardens don't,or won't understand is the old frontiers are gone.More and more suburbs and people now. But,I saved the best disaster for last. The reintroduction of wolves in the U.S.These devil dogs kill every sheep, goat, buffalo, elk, moose, deer, and anything else they can swallow. There has been a quite war in the northeastern states by farmers who shoot every wolf they see.The wardens are furious but can't stop them. Some farmers have went so far to hang dead wolves at the wardens stations, especially in Wyoming and montanta,Idaho too.Wardens in the south east have blamed people for bringing in the wild hogs by interstate and they are the ones doing all the mayheim !

Went snipe hunting one time. Didnt know if it was a ferret or a bird and they wouldn't tell this kid, so this kid found and came back with funky flytrap plants instead as a backup prize.

why would anyone tout or condone hunting these creatures? have you ever heard them? no other bird makes such lovely sounds with their feathers, called Winnowing. the narrator didn't even talk about that.
