We have them in Southeastern PA! They love the bird seed we get from Lowe's. One has nuts in it along with sunflowers and one has some dried cherries. Yeah, they share our feeder with cardinals, blue jays, and red bellied woodpeckers! We have a lot of birds, but the grosbeak's song is so beautiful!! We get mourning doves too and their song is so sad. Here's to the red bellied grosbeak!! We love seeing our birds come back generation after generation to get food out of feeder. Nothing better than knowing you are helping to keep them well nourished.

Unfortunately I must forgo answering comments for awhile because the rotator cuff tear in my left arm is healing slowly, and I just learned that I have carpal tunnel syndrome in my right arm. I seem to have a body made out of spare parts- made on the cheap in China. So I won’t be answering comments before the beginning of August, if then. But if there’s something you’d like to tell me, please do so. I’ll be interested in what you have to say. It’s just that you’ll have to guess at what I would have answered. Two rose-breasted males at my feeder today eating suet. They come every year but don’t stay long. I’m in Louisiana. My large yard is a cardinal haven, with six pairs all year long, and no one is forced to leave. ( constant source of fresh water, food, many trees and bushes, and no predators) But it sure is nice to see the rose-breasted cousins.

No predators? Don’t you get Cooper’s Hawks or Sharp-shinned Hawks? The Cooper’s hawks have been decimating our Mourning Dove population this last couple of weeks. Yesterday as I stood near the living room window a dove crashed into it and as soon as it was on the ground a Cooper’s hawk landed and took it away.

In fact, when I was trying to identify the birds, I couldn't find them as "birds of B.C." no matter how I described them. But when I explored "birds of Washington State," they popped up right away. They are said to be social birds, and they hung around in clusters for over half an hour. Yes, eight of them at one time, and then they broke off into smaller numbers. At first I wondered if they were a type of Starling, because in my experience, Starlings usually descend in a little flock. Time for another 20lb. bag of sunflower seeds.

Lovely narration! You must be a professional - havent I heard you on PBS? You took a lovely subject and made it even more lovely with your style! I live in central NJ, and you can imagine my surprise when I saw a female rose breasted grosbeak. I was confused at first, she almost looked like a robin, but the stripes on her head gave her away. I played recordings of grosbeak calls and songs from here on KZbin (a very pretty song!) and sure enough I caught a fleeting glimpse of the male - what a treat! They are so few in numbers here, thanks to the invasive birds that proliferate the area (English house wren? I forgot- maybe its English house sparrows). They are the ones that steal nests from the indigenous birds and continue to breed and overpopulate. Usually, we have plenty of bluejay and cardinal families, but now they are becoming scarce! I am hoping to see the grosbeaks again, but now they aren't answering the songs and calls like they were. When they did answer, they never come closer than 200ft (except the first female I saw who momentarily took a rest on my fence). I have never seen them where I put out my birdseed. Anyway, it is still a treat to see them, and all my feathered friends!

Thanks, Ricky. I didn't know they were in the Cardinal family nor did I know that two of the Grosbeaks were finches. It's surprising what I learn when I start reading up in order to write a script.Surprising and fun.

Obviously you don't live in the red zone on that map I showed in the film, David. Same thing happens here, although this year, by the time the females left, we'd had ten days worth of them. It was a treat.

Yes, we live in upper northeast Georgia. We’re the ones that had the bluebirds fighting over territory with the tree swallows. We just had Carolina wrens fledge last week. So much fun to watch all the action. The bluebirds laid 5 eggs the first time. They didn’t hatch. Now, she is sitting on 4 more eggs. Keeping our fingers crossed! We put up a box my husband made and can open it on the side and watch the action once the babies hatch! 💐

We live in Buena Vista, CO (8,000 ft. altitude) and had a rose-breasted grosbeak show up last week! It was fun to see your video soon afterwards. Thought you'd get a kick out of this info:) Btw, your husband was a teacher of mine in the early 70's. Tell Connie hello from Molly and Rocky! (we both follow your utube channel)

Yes, Molly, Connie remembers the three amigas, you two and Barb Rufkar (sp?). He talked for five minutes about his memories of you and your connection to Elythe. We know Buena Vista! Thirty years ago we used to camp at Collegiate Peaks. Connie was pleased to hear that you pay some attention to wildlife, and I, of course, was happy to know that you're following my KZbin channel. Thanks for saying hello.

Had never seen this bird here in mid Ohio before. After identifying it as a Rose chested Grosbeak, this one is different from pictures because it has a strip of robin orange from the bottom of it’s folded wing to the white underbelly. And of course the give away was that red chest! Can someone let me know about the orange color though? Fluke of nature, crossbreed or normal?

I've been to Trinidad but didn't see the flag. It must be beautiful. See one in Georgia? In migration only, I would think, Soraya. By the way, I posted a bunch of films from my visit to Asa Wright Nature Center in Trinidad. If you look back to spring 2018, you'll find several, including the Tufted Coquette, two of the Hermit Hummingbirds, White-necked Jacobin, Crested Oropendola, Ruby-topaz hummingbird, and Copper-rumped Hummingbird.
