Joan Baez is one of the most prominent folk singers of the 60s and 70s -- and still sounds the same today. Beautiful singer and guitarist.

You notice you don’t need the lyrics. Joans crystal clear voice and diction make them unnecessary- beautiful song. Thank you.

I love Joan Baez's two-record album, in which Joan sings all Bob Dylan songs. No one could have sung them better than Joan Baez, so beautiful.

i agree with your points about the song joans voice is beautiful and the song tells a story, the song was written in 1974 its nostalgic and tells the story of her and dylans rise and relationship in the early 60s with Dylans current marriage in shambles at the time of her writting this and dylan being lost and calling her for help or guidance or for an old lovers connection. its a very sweet song with sorrow being the main sentiment. Dylan wrote a song in response called "oh sister" which is a mystical song thats intentionally vague but baez then wrote a song in response to that called "oh brother" which is a really vicious song towards dylan.

I wouldn't say " a vicious song " about "oh brother" but she sounds very angry about Dylan's "Oh sister" song as she couldn't get how come she could become "his sister" after what they'd lived. I do love her "Oh brother"!

If you had seen a live video, you would have seen how good a guitar player she is. She's using all of her fingers on both hands and singing. Quite accomplished.

"I bought you some cufflinks, you brought me something" pretty much sums up what happened. Poetry. She gave her heart, innocent. He did not, cynically. What a clear illustration of a flawed relationship. Devastating. Haunting, indeed. Joan was every bit the equal of Dylan. That may be why you found her uplifting. She was no longer innocent, no longer in his long shadow. (bloodied but unbowed?)

Very similar to A Star Is Born storyline, in reverse. She was just too talented and grounded to let his rust tear her apart.

Joan was one of the singers I listened to quite often when I was very young. And you were exactly right in using the word "haunting" because a few years ago I started getting the craving to hear her again, and it wasn't about any particular song, it was her incomparable voice that I missed. Dylan is one of my absolute favorite songwriters, but he had a reputation for treating women pretty badly. He had a girlfriend named Suzy when he first started singing in clubs. Then he met Joan and started an affair with her at the same time. Then he cheated on Joan with Sara who later became his wife. But it was really his despicable and disrespectful behavior towards Joan that was so terrible. Joan helped him get his start and she was repeatedly slapped in the face for it (not literally). Anyway, I just found your channel today and I love your style, you are very likeable and I will check out your other videos now. Good luck to you!

First time watching a reaction of yours here because of Joan, enjoyed it. I am long time fan, I have her seen her many times, and she sounds the same live, just as beautifully haunting. I am subscribing.

There is a later live version where Joan jokes and changes the last line to 'if you offer me diamonds and rust I'll take the diamonds'.

Funny you mention that, when I saw her a few years ago, she changed that last line to "if you're offering me diamonds and rust, I'd rather have a Grammy!" I literally died laughing! 😂

I like what you had to say in reference to the song,an yes her voice does have that haunting quality, she started using her higher ranges later in life, she apparently wrote the song after the phone call she got from him out of the blue...Joan wrote a film theme song and sang it for the iconic sci-fi movie Silent Running which you can find on KZbin, its a beautiful song.

I like when she sarcastically says "You were so good with words". I always heard that line that way. Look OOOOooo your so smart, you just know everything, Aren't YOU perfect!"

Thank you, GP. Joan owns my heart much of the time... like whenever I hear this. My back was in a news photo of her in the late 60's. Only I know this is true. She's an Avatara of music. (You make me think of the Mona Lisa, btw.)

Never understood the last word until I read the lyrics. I always thought she said "there". But what she really said is "paid". So, "if you're offering me diamonds and rust I've already paid". The work "paid" is stronger and more poignant than the word "there".
