I remember being in line at a Joan Osborne concert in Natick, MA waiting to get my "Love & Hate" cd & programme signed. I said to a fellow fan "I never knew who 'Crazy Baby' was about - her bi polar boyfriend, bi polar family member...etc." The fan said "I think you should ask her [Joan]." Keep in mind this person had already met Joan and was on her 20th Joan Osborne concert. I was on my second. (The second was when she started signing CD's for her fans.) Well anyway, as my turn came up I took a picture of Joan with another fan ahead of me. Through persuasion of this other fan I asked Joan who "Crazy Baby" was really about. She couldn't have been nicer. She told me she had a friend who was going through a nasty depression, and wrote the song for him as an intervention; to get help. He apparently did! As she was asking my name to put "To Dan" next to her autograph, I told her that the line that spoke to me was the line: "Your hands are really shaking something awful/As you light your 27th cigarette" because I used to be a 3 pack a day smoker. She was like "Really?!!" looking really concerned that I might drop dead right there. And I said "But I gave it up." She was like "Oh, Thank God." sighing in relief. It was a real human interaction - that was not at all awkward - with a famous singer. But then I left thinking "I just met Joan Osborne and she's really nice!!" But the topic of the song itself should not be trivialized. Joan may have written the song for a friend, but she also knows that her music has touched people is some way or another. She's a class act!!!

Dan Wangerin wow, thank you for your story, I've been wondering who this gorgeous beautiful song was for.....Man, I love her and Relish...I need to check all of her stuff out still. She has become one of my most favorite female artists. This song makes me tear up, it's so beautiful and real.

Have not listen to Joan over the past 2 weeks...busy at work. Listen to her tonight and she just makes life so much better. I am so appreciative of being able to listen to her sing. Seeing the video of her performing is an added bonus. Someone mentioned that Joan Osborne was authentic and I agree. I am a hugh fan of this beautiful lady. I hope that she is as happy as those whose lives have been touch by her. God Blees you Joan Osborne.

This song means more to me than the incredible Joan Osborne will ever know. I have a personal experience with this song, and it helped me and those close to me through a really tough time, and her music continues to be an inspiration and source of peace for me. I was blessed enough to meet Miss Osborne on the Grammy Women Who Rock cruise in November, and when it was my turn to meet her for an autograph, I simply broke down and had to walk away. I was embarrassed as my husband explained to her how overwhelmed I was, and I simply wanted to thank her and let her know how her music had touched our lives (St. Teresa, One of Us, and so many others...). When I finally regained my composure and knelt down to speak to her, she took my hand and held it, and sincerely thanked me for being a fan. She explained that the music business can be tough at times, as I so imagine, and that it's knowing that her music touches her fans and reaches our souls, that has kept her going, at times. What she said to me meant so much, even more than the song itself, and since then she has continued to motivate me to be a better person, and if I ever need to hear a kind word or inspiration, I just play me some Joan Osborne tunes. I met her again last week at her show at Emelin Theater and again thanked her, and she again was a class act, kind and generous. Her music is my therapy, Her voice is my drug of choice. We are planning to see her again in PA. Thank you for posting this video.

I have seen all the descriptions and personal comments here. I am shocked that the word "authentic" never popped in for anyone. This is some of the most real music I've ever heard in my life. The reason why she can touch all our souls is because there's nothing held back. Sammy Hagar once said you can't fake goosebumps, and I'm not.
