I remember when this song came out (child of the 90's here) This song made a little uproar at the time, I was a careless child then so I didn't take the time to decipher it until now. Being older now (married with two children to raise) and living life and especially in the past few months , I look at our country and I see empty streets, towns, closed parks, closed library's, buisness that are shut down both temporarily and permanently , families not able to see their loved ones, be with them in their dying moments, hold their hands, kiss them, touch them feel their face look at them in their eyes and tell them they love them 😢💔❤️🤍💙,etc.. I look at this song and video as astonishing 🌌🌟💖🌠😇 What if God was one of us? What if ...? The video with people of all walks of life being" God" , the love of humanity in the video... Something we aren't seeing now. A lot of people aren't going to church, work, activities, seeing their family.. Etc in the name of a different entity "telling"them that they can't 🤔 Esphiens 6:12. .. What if God is one of us, what does he see right now?.. 💔😢😷🦠💉Sadness, heartbreak, FEAR, .. Etc. We are in a spiritual WAR. Hindsight is 2020✊🏽❤️🤍💙 Appreciate this video, the world 🌎 is changing. What a time to be alive. 🌌🌠🌇🌅🌄☀️🌻.

When this song came out, so many people I knew/know didn’t like it. I actually like it. I took the meaning behind as being, if we are made in his image, what if he was the man that is standing beside u, would u pass judgement on him if he was dressed like a slob or maybe a homeless person. How would u treat him? I think we should treat EVERYONE no matter what their circumstance is, as we would want to treated. No judgement. That’s ssssssooooo many people find that hard to do. I like ur reaction.

The only place god exists is in your human spirit, your heart. He does not live in the Bible, Koran, Torah or any one of hundreds if not thousands of books used to indoctrinate people. Their intent may be pure but belief lies in the individual and the way they demonstrate the presence if god within them and absolutely NOWHERE else.

Never knew the name of the artist but yep remember the song. It got a lot of air time on the radio. I always thought it had double meaning in many parts. Some you mentioned. The line "Nobody calling on the phone, except maybe the Pope in Rome." Did she mean only the Pope was trying to get in touch with God. Or was she saying He'd be the only one not to realise God was among us? This was a rare soothing yet thought provoking song.

A song that makes you think. It just made me realize I’m not doing my best to be aware of God in my everyday life and loving everyone as a child of God. I believe there’s a little bit of God in all of us. In the present day world, with the riots and the violence we see on TV everyday it’s hard to keep that in the forefront of my thoughts. I have to try harder. Thanks for the reminder. I needed that. Peace!

When I was much younger and this song came out, I always thought of it as asking if god was among us as a stranger, in anonymity, and looking like nobody of importance - how would we behave around him? How would we treat him? etc. But I can certainly see your point.

I think this song poses a question towards believers and non believers (atheists) alike, thoose who believe, maybe to an far darker/extreme extent, would have to wrap their heads around a new reality that God might be someone (Human) who they dont like or might belong to a group of people that are looked down upon . The same goes for atheists, would they be willing to accept the doctrine, the stories and the saints/prothets, the words what several men/women of God give? Would they be afraid about their position in afterlife? Would they be worried if thier disbelief brought them to a horrible world of pain? Would they accept that reality? This song is a beautiful song, i think that song can bring people of different beliefs (Christianity, Islam, Buddihism e.t.c) and people with different views (people of science, Atheists, agnostics, theists) toghether.

I love the way you listen to songs unaware of their origin, your reactions are fun to watch. I especially enjoy your reactions to songs that I grew up with...you know, from the old days. I always thought she meant that it would be an eye opener to see God's reaction to our everyday life & how would he handle life on earth as an everyday person. No power, no godly-ness, no angels, no all-knowing ability, "just a slob like one of us, just a stranger on a bus trying to make his way home...." (and needing grace like all of us.)

That is the most straightforwardly "pop" song on the album, which leans a lot more rootsy and bluesy otherwise. She's an amazing singer, has toured with The Funk Brothers (who played on all those Motown records everyone likes) and Phil Lesh & Friends (formerly part of The Grateful Dead) and puts out record after record year in, year out.

If I’m not mistaken this was the song for “Joan Of Arcadia” (which, by the way, was an EXCELLENT tv show from the 1990s) or at least was the theme for one of the first couple of episodes…the lead character, Joan, sees this cute guy on the bus and he talks to her, as God…she thinks he’s crazy…the next time she sees him, it’s a totally different visage! You should definitely check out the show…way too short-lived. Great channel and, as always, a great reaction!

There’s a lot of metaphors behind it that people don’t understand if you watch the video closely you notice there was the big lady sitting on the beach I mean she wasn’t big per se but she wasn’t thin and young and then there is the guy with the piercings basically using the analogy that God can use anyone that god can be in anyone and God can manifest through anyone and you never know when but if you’re judging someone whether that person is being used by God in a certain way they are just a vessel and God is in them using them and you’re witnessing god through them but you wouldn’t know it because you’re too busy looking at the surface that’s part of what it means but there’s so much more to it and there’s so many different ways to look at this song in fact sometimes the atheist who doesn’t believe in God and who may be at the worst point in their life and still chooses not to believe in God can still be somebody that God uses to reach you to deliver a message imagine you’re on a bus and you happen to see somebody that you think God would not be pleased with maybe a prostitute a pimp drug dealer whatever and maybe even a Satanist and you end up striking a conversation with them because maybe you have to sit next to them and you ask if you can sit next to them and they say I don’t care whatever and somehow the conversation goes and you are struggling with something in your marriage while you’re arguing a lot with your kids or you don’t have money to pay bills or whatever it is you’re going through and that person that you’re afraid to sit by or don’t want to entertain ends up saying some words of wisdom to you that is so impactful it changes your life forever or maybe they give you money without you even asking and they say you know what I just feel like giving this to you and it’s right on time when you need it the most even though they could be ungodly people or the worst people or an angry person or bitter or drug attic’s or nice people that are very kind and loving but their atheist whatever the reason is that you might be judging them God can still be using them and what if God was one of us what if he was working through the average Joe and you didn’t even realize it and you spent too much time judging someone instead of looking at the value that they could bring to your life if they happen to be bringing something valuable to you like what if the wisdom or something that you need it at the moment was being given to you by the person you thought was last on gods list to be used by him because you know sometimes we end up reject God‘s blessings because of who it’s coming from so what if God is saying through this song that these are all my children and I’m trying to call them all back home including you and including the drug addict and so on and specifically including all the people you wouldn’t want to sit next to and what if god is saying and I’m here to deliver a message through everyone to you to show you I’m trying to reach everybody and you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover when you don’t know the whole story that’s one in-depth way of looking at it but like I said there’s many different ways of saying this music I will leave you with this though when you judge the way someone looks and you think that they’re the least person God would use remember what God himself said in the beginning he said let us make man in our image so no matter who you’re judging remember you’re still judging the image of God

Matthew 25:31-46 KJV. 31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: 32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: 33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. 41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: 43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. 46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. ************************************************************************************************************************** This is what I've always gotten from that song. The Lord says that when we help the poor or the needy, or the sick, they we have helped him. So, to me, she is asking, what if God was in the form or a regular human like you and I, how would we treat him? What if he was the bum on the street, or the drunk in the alleyway, or the old lady begging for food? Would we treat him the same seeing him appearing like that, not being able to tell he was God? Or, would we cast him aside, or ignore him, or be mean spirited? Of course , for those that believe, if we know the bum or the beggar is God, we will show love and respect, and go out of our way to help, but what if we didn't know? And, since we don't know who the bum or the beggar is, why should we treat them as less than human? Why shouldn't we care for them in the same way that God would want us to. It's about showing love for humanity, and treating everyone with dignity.

if we believe that we all created based on God image, we can see His face in all of us. What if the stranger on the bus was God? of course. Thats why we must have empathy and love for others. You cant say you love God if you cannot love His creation. This is not the exact meaning of this song but this is what the song means to me.

Joan Osborne much like her hispanic counterpart Ricardo Arjona, its like supposing the big JC is among us, and through actions showing us how we should be and interact with one another, Ricardo is a Guatemalan singer-songwriter, sings in spanish, maybe do a reaction to his song: Jesus es Verbo no Sustantivo, translation: Jesus is a Verb not a Noun. Its in spanish, if you want, I can translate the lyrics into english.

I like to think that Joan Osborne tried to open our minds and eyes about what are we doing with our life and how would we change our conduct if we find God.

What a thought-provoking question. What if God was the beggar on the street but you passed Him by without expressing to Him the love you are supposed to be spreading?

I won't get into a debate about the existence of God or the evidence for or against it. The song makes sense in the context of the show it was the theme for, "Joan of Arcadia" in which the protagonist meets God in the guises of different people and he asks her to do specific things that end up improving someone's life. She never knows who he'll be next, one time it was her real-life father and actor Russ Tamblyn. The songs asks if you would call him by name and what would you say to him.

She is asking us to hypothesize.....What if God looked like any of us and lived among us, and looked just like any joe or jane on the street? What would you ask him? If you saw what he/she looked like, what would you do ror believe?

We're God, and God is us; it's no more complicated than that... I don't believe in the concept of "Divinity", [other than, perhaps, describing the universe in a general way]. I think, that has brought us the horrors of unbridled capitalism... ie Seeing money, and money systems as "God".

What of that stressed waitress whose liver walked out on her and she was distracted trying to serve you. Did you show her the live you are supposed to be spreading? What if she WAS God? Did you pass or fail His test? This song makes a Christian re-examine a so-called ,Christian life for sure.

I really like this song, except that I wish that she'd switched out the kind of cheeky throwaway line about the Pope for one that said something about living life ASSUMING that God is present within/among us and that we need to treat everyone as if we see that in them. Because I feel like that's the point of her song, but it never quite gets there.

I think god is coming to visit for a while because he gets lonely up in heaven. She asks what if god walked among us for a while? What if god tried out this life for a while. Just another person on the street, to our eyes.
