Hearing this song for the first time, on the radio, was like a religious experience for me. I had just landed in Medford, Oregon, and was driving my rental car from the airport towards my hotel. I channel-surfed the radio for a few minutes until I found a likable radio station... within a few minutes, this song came on. I was choked up, tears in my eyes.... this song resonated in my spirit like an epiphany.... I forgot about going to the hotel and drove instead to the nearest record store I could find, and bought Joan's album on cassette. I still listen to the song regularly, 30 years later, and it still gives me goosebumps.

And yeah, yeah, God is great Yeah, yeah, God is good Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Tryin' to make his way home? If God had a face what would it look like? And would you want to see If seeing meant that you would have to believe In things like heaven and in Jesus and the Saints And all the prophets? And yeah, yeah, God is great Yeah, yeah, God is good Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Tryin' to make his way home? I was singing the song in the shower today and I've this epiphany Jesus said - what you did to one of my lesser brothers, you did to Me. If you feed him, you feed Me. If you clothed him, you clothed Me. If you've visited him in prison, you've visited Me. If you didn't do any of these things to any of my lesser brothers, you didn't do it for Me. And i was singing this song and thought what does it really mean. And i thought that if i love somebody too much, his pain becomes my pain. Distance doesn't affect it. So what Jesus was saying is that He loves us and feels pain of each one of us as His own. Same as child's pain is a direct pain of his mother. So if we harm ANY human, we bring similar or even greater pain to God. Maybe it's one of the purposes of this world, to see God in each one of us, His love, His care, His glory and His hope.

Heard this song at work the other day and it brought back memories, couldn’t remember who sang it so I had to look it up. As I recall it was sort of a one hit wonder, also had some controversy from the Bible loving people claiming it was negatively talking about god. Probably haven’t heard this song since the late 90’s. I was 12 when this song came out in ‘95. Times were simpler back then, no social media, not many people, at least where I live, had cell phones. Kids still hung out with friends and spent most their time out playing or hanging out at the mall. The older I get the more I look back at those days and realize times were better back then. People were better back then in many ways too.

Im listening just now :-) It came to my mind yesterday... I was playing with the words a little to be honest, since it says "would you want to see, if seeing meant that you would have to believe"... Well If you saw, you would know. So knowing means you can not believe anymore, because you know. Some time back I heard in a video, imagine that this truly happens, that you meet God and can ask just one question. The author said pause if you need, and really really think what would you ask, take your time... The more I thought about it, about the question, I came to a conclusion that there really is no one question to ask. And the author made the same point :-)

He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son. After having suffered and died to provide a way that we all could choose to be saved from judgment FOR FREE (Epesians 2:8-10)....though he won't be going home alone, his return is coming soon for all of us who chose to ACCEPT his FREE gift of salvation and listen only to him.

Man...this takes me back to sitting in my dad`s carpet shop in Johannesburg in 1996, bored out of my skull with nothing more than a radio, 5FM and some of the best DJ`s in the world keeping me sane...Mark Gillman, Alex Jay, Sasha Marteningo, Ian F...thanks lads, you kept me from going under in that lonely ass strip mall called Stax Village in Alberton Town...

Somente escute a música e pense.

A Masterpiece of the 90s, my childhood anthem, and one of my moms favorite songs which came out right before she was murdered. This song will always mean so much to me and everytime I listen to it I feel it’s a special moment I’m sharing with my mom. What a blessing.
