Joan Osborne (born 1962) is an American singer-songwriter and interpreter of music, having recorded in various musical genres including rock, pop, soul, R&B, blues and country. This is from her 1995 album "Relish" which was nominated for a Grammy Award.
"ST. TERESA"
Sit down on the corner, just a little crime
When I make my money, got to get my dime
Sit down with her baby, wind is full of trash
She bold as the street light, dark and sweet as hash
Way down in the hollow, leavin' so soon
Oh, St. Teresa, higher than the moon
Reach down for the sweet stuff, when she looks at me
I know any man sees you like I see
Follow down the side street movin' single file
She say...
"That's where I'll hold you, sleepin' like a child"
Way down in the hollow, leavin' so soon
Oh, St. Teresa, higher than the moon
Just what I've been needin', feel it rise in me
She say...
"Every stone a story, like a rosary"
Corner St. Teresa, just a little crime
When I make my money, got to get my dime
Way down in the hollow, leavin' so soon
Oh, St. Teresa, higher than the moon
You called up in the sky
You called up in the clouds
Is there something you forgot to tell me...
Tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me
Show me, my Teresa, feel it rise in me
Every stone a story, like a rosary

The song is about addiction. I am grateful to Joan Osborne for this sensitive and compassionate work....

Is it really “about addiction,” or is it about a drug addicted prostitute who also sells crack? I think it’s just a bleak portrait of a desperate person, not really about addiction in general.

I never realised they made two videos for this. Spider Web and this one are two of my favourite rock songs ever. I would never have bought this based on One Of Us, but the whole album is incredibly powerful.

When I first heard this song, I realized there was something very complex about it musically. Finally figured it out. The song is written in 6/8. The vocals and instruments sing and play it with two pulses to the measure (ONE two three FOUR five six) but the percussion is syncopated and plays three pulses to the measure (one TWO three FOUR five SIX). It adds a sense of Imbalance that suits the subject beautifully.

I’ve been obsessed with this song this past week (after liking it well enough for… 29 years??) and I noticed the almost polyrhythm thing happening. 6 beats to a measure, but the drummer’s rim taps happen every other beat… very strange. Similar to what you said: it adds an almost subliminal complexity to the song. I’m not a drummer, though, so I’m just focused on what the chords might be. Hoping to find some live footage of her band playing it. Of course, playing it on solo guitar requires dropping the mandolin from the arrangement, basically, and finding a way to play the main verse progression on a 6-string.

I think this amazing song just got swallowed up in the American machine of one hit wonders. Everyone just thought she sang One of Us but fewer than should have listened to and bought the whole album like I did. And I’m always glad i did. As a fully admitted addict now, this kind of strength still resonates.

The interpretation and inspiration behind the song according to her is about a woman that she would watch from her lower east end new York apartment selling drugs on the corner with her baby in a stroller. She said that she thought that she was a really strong person to be out there doing what she was doing with a child by her side.

Austin Barry This is actually the original. It was released as her first single before “One of Us” , but it didn’t make much of an impact. After “One of Us” and “Right Hand Man” another video was made and the single was re-released.
