I saw Sutherland and Ludwig in many great roles, but never as Angelica and Principessa. Two titans. But I did see Scotto in the theater as Angelica and, while not the great vocalist as Sutherland, she gave such a searing portrayal that it still haunts me,

I agree with you, poster of this video. This recording of "Suor Angelica", for me, is still the best, Bonynge's tempi and emphasis reveal both the calm and the desperate passages of the opera in all their expressivity and rich colors, and the entire cast is amazing, above all Sutherland in one of her most dramatic assumptions (and using her often neglected potential as a full spinto soprano, also thrilling in her verismo - but not hysterical - approach) and Ludwig in one of the darkest, most haunting interpretations of the Zia Principessa. Sutherland and Ludwig seldom sang together, but here their partnership makes wonders. I've never heard a more tense and compeling Angelica-Zia duet.

The entire conduction of the opera is beautiful, right from the opening Ave Maria! A unitary orchestral velvet, certainly the result of in-depth knowledge of the French repertoire of the second half of the 19th century!

Simply Amazing....I agree this is probably the best recording of Sour Angelica of all times. But recently, the Great barbara Frittoli mades another exhibition in other performance available in KZbin.,,,please all, check it out ! :)

@@dodotassi I'm a great admirer of both Sutherland and Ludwig but for me the classic recording of this opera, without question, has to be Tebaldi/Simionato/Gardelli c.1963.
