What a tremendous, stellar sound and vocal technique. Personal preferences put aside, you simply cannot deny what an outstanding singer she was. Acoustic and artistic preferences are another thing. It's fine to dislike her but plain stupid to call her a bad singer.

She was the greatest opera singer who ever lived. He voice was huge, yet incredibly agile. Her top never thinned out, like it does for so many sopranos. The beauty of the sound she produced was unmatched. Her technique was never bettered, and the trill was unsurpassable. Much of her success was due to working with her husband and taskmaster, but he knew knew exactly what he was doing - and she did the work!. People complain about her diction or her lack of drama; all that improved over time. I've never been as thrilled by the sound of any other singer as much as I have by her, because what she could do with her voice no one else could.

Perfect legato - lovely full tone - bright excellent high notes, a PERFECT trill - pinpoint accuracy in the coloratura - plus a great top Eflat. She was truly STUPENDOUS.

@@silverkitty2503 What a load of crap! By your logic, Sutherland should have spent her entire career recording in the studio in her PJs. Why did she even bother to appear on stage or TV! getting all that hair, make-up and costumes specifically designed according to her characters or the period?

@@alioffe4321 I think they were referring to the fact that for an opera singer, voice is what matters, not looks. Joan Sutherland may not have been the most beautiful woman in the world, but she definitely had one of the best voices, which is what is important in her career and what everyone who listens to her cares about.

Of the many wonders of Joan Sutherland, one is her absolute consistency! She never gave a bad performance, she was never anything less than her best --- which is already saying a lot --- and she was as brilliant in live performance as she was on recordings. Perhaps no other operatic artist matches this standard. Her "Sempre Libera" is one of the glories of opera, always thrilling, always perfectly sung, a spectacular tight-rope walk with aplomb and strength, beauty and technical brilliance. She is certainly one of the greatest sopranos of all time.
@Shahrdad
@Shahrdad 5 жыл бұрын
The only soprano's I've heard who could meet every technical demand of this aria are Sutherland and Callas. And the only soprano I've heard who sang Sempre Libera better than Sutherland is Callas circa 1952. She sang it with a Wagnerian sound, perfect coloratura, far better diction, and the coloring and interpretation that was beyond Sutherland. The manic desperation in the second verse, and the way she colors every repeated high C at the very end, as if each C is a different thought, is something I have to yet hear from another soprano. Technically Sutherland is the only person to match Callas in those performances. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3yQYqqHpKhgoM0

@@Anduril919 I'm not old enough. Recordings give a very good idea of the singers' musical artistry and technical prowess. I did hear Sutherland live several times, and she was great. @@Anduril919 I wish I had heard Callas before she got thin, but I was born a few decades too late.
