Wow - did she ever handle this magnificently. The line is absolutely exceptional.

The ACCURACY of the coloratura is what I love most about her. Plus the variations and the full voice. Did I mention the perfect trills and the excellent high note at the end? She was really SOMETHING! The costumes were WONDERFUL here too. This gets an "A" from me.
@nwdixieboy3 жыл бұрын
The costume!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is so rare you hear coloratura with full voice.
@meltzerboy2 жыл бұрын
Yes, indeed. The coloratura of JS is always accurate, brilliant, and musical. I get the impression she could have shown off much more of her technique had she preferred to take that route; however, she is too much of a musician to do so.

Queen of belcanto Dame Joan
@RossiniSoprano15 жыл бұрын
She is letting the music and her singing do the work they are supposed to, since this is bel canto at its finest. The fact that she does not telegraph every emotion with a gesture or movement doesn't mean she can't act. Some people are not satisfied unless the singer rolls on the floor and lets their hair hang down into the orchestra pit (AN, anyone?).
@ESilva-gw9ig5 жыл бұрын
Simply amazing. Who sings this way these days? No one comes close to her now.

Nope. Proper Bel Canto technique

I so agree, RossiniSoprano. I am not much of a Netrebko fan, but I loved what she said after her Met Puritani. Some smarmy interviewer mentioned the falling on the floor and hanging her hair into the orchestra pit, and that Sutherland hadn't done that. Netrebko's brilliant answer: "Maybe she didn't have to." Truer words were never spoken.
@aprendizercomygor7 жыл бұрын
Netrebko is a lot smarter and down to earth than her detractors portray her to be. Also at the time of her Puritani, an interviewer compared her Elvira to the performances by Sutherland in the same production, and she cleverly pointed out that she knew she could never reach the levels of Sutherland and was instead getting inspiration from Freni's way of singing Elvira, a more lyrical than virtuosistic approach. And in my opinion in the last performances of her run she did achieve what she had been trying to convey. There were many wonderful moments of lyric, sweetest singing.

+Ygor Coelho well...what is sure is that Puritani is much for her than roles like Lady M. , Aida, Bolena....
@nathandavis30022 жыл бұрын
I agree. I enjoyed her Elvira. I wouldn't listen to a recording of it when Sutherland and Callas's recordings of it exist, but I would have been thrilled to experience it live. However her Aida, Macbeth, Turandot... I wouldnt go to them if SHE was paying ME

I try to imagine myself a brave director who asked La Divina or La Stupenda to throw onto the floor or present themselves naked......

one of my first exposures to a full opera was Sutherlands Bolena (and her Lucrezia). Hands down this is top notch~! You can't pull around a costume an a voice like that without bein somethin special, an that, Dame Joan was.

I love her voice post-prime because you can hear her effort and be thankful for it. In her prime it was almost too easy, and phenomenal as it was, there was, for me a strange resentment, that it was so easy! I've always loved Dame Joan and always will.
@MrStpendouslvforjo6 жыл бұрын
David - I'm JUST like you!!! It seems almost TOO easy for her before like 1975.... and after 1975 - it's more REAL and somehow makes a greater impression on me! I adore her above all others - and really am STUNNED by her singing in her early years - bit it's the later years that I listen to time and time again!
@davidallen36876 жыл бұрын
@@MrStpendouslvforjo I tend to only listen to the later stuff on here, although I love Il bacio from much earlier. Later on, her voice was much bigger and her lower notes much more audible!

@@mabuo16 As Sutherland grew older she would choose the best key, even if it wasn't the original key. She also sang music "up" throughout her career, in a higher key, when it suited her. But she was rarely criticized for that.

Oh, and another thing, as you get older, you can't do a lot of movement while you are singing very difficult music without losing some of the singing. I am almost 50, and have had to reign it in myself. Joan was older here.

She did plenty of running in her early Lucias, and even that Callas said she would never do. Perhaps she should have added push-ups and wind-sprints.

Hahaha! I saw Joan singing on a TV show where she was swinging on a swing in this enormous dress and running all around whilst singing the most difficult scales runs and arpeggios. She capped all this off with an above High C note!

@Coloraturissimo Regarding Devereux......Sutherland had said, with a smirk, that they decided against it because she didn't look anything like Bette Davis.

it's understandable that for Australians it's wonderful, I like patriotism, but you also have to be realistic and concrete when giving an opinion..... you don't understand a word, I say, one!! this has always been the enormous handicap of this singer..... opera was born as "reciting singing" and whoever, like her, betrays this rule has betrayed everything....THE WORD....THE WORD FIRST OF ALL ....the rest remains a mere execution of unimportant sounds
@RM-py1bq Жыл бұрын
Every time I heard her (recital, opera) you could clearly hear whatever the language was. I don't actually speak or understand these languages but in the audience you could discern vowel colors, plosive and dentalized consonants, etc. Her diction was no worse than any of the other great singers she was onstage with. There are a number of greats who had rather curious pronunciations and accents. Other times, one must admit that Dame Joan exhibited some mushy diction (mostly on recordings), and I always felt that perhaps she was just tired. Also, it struck me that the singers who are so highly prized for wonderful diction are seldom acknowledged for much of anything else.
