CALLAS? TEBALDI ?...
@joshuamcpherson00710 ай бұрын
@@giociak99 Of course Maria and Renata were great...they are legendary singers...for a reason. Sutherland thought Callas was incredible, and Renata was her dearest operatic friend. That said, Sutherland could do things with her instrument the others could not do, or she did them more perfectly. Franco Zeffirelli, fresh from working with Callas, was astonished the first time he heard Sutherland at the piano. As he put it "this women was producing sounds and tones I have never heard from a human being before". Pavarotti said "Joan Sutherland had, certainly, the greatest singing voice of the last century". Pavarotti heard the great voices of the 50's 60's and beyond, and worked with many. Both men were there. They heard these voices live, not on recordings.
@giociak9910 ай бұрын
@joshuamcpherson007Toscanini defined the Pesaro soprano Renata as an "angel's voice". Toscanini, one of the greatest orchestra conductors of all time, also said: "Tebaldi's voice is heavenly, it is one of those voices that enter your soul, which go straight to your heart; she is a pure, clear, luminous voice. When Tebaldi sings, everything is serene, the sun shines… it seems that the scent of spring is emanating from her» . they talk about Mary Leonard Bernstein: "...because she was - without a doubt - the greatest dramatic singer of our time. Franco Corelli: "She was born to sing and to be on stage. Music and her voice entered the heart, she produced melody. She had life inside her, inside her voice Montale, Nobel Prize 75, wrote When Maria will no longer sing, she will leave a legend behind her”. many years after her death she is alive
@joshuamcpherson00710 ай бұрын
@@giociak99 I would agree with those sentiments. Maria was the greatest dramatic singer of the last century...a singing actress. Shirley Verret was called "the black Callas" because she emotes so powerfully through her characters too. I love Verrett very much. Toscanini never heard Sutherland, so we have no idea what his thoughts would have been. Tebaldi had a unique timbre, with a dark/light quality and regal delivery. I have only seen Sutherland blow kisses from the stage once following a performance...and those kisses were directed at Renata in the audience in Venice. Tebaldi thought Sutherland's voice was a natural marvel. They were great friends.

vocally nobody surpassed sutherland. the amount of glory and triumph she was able to put into sound was unique. dramatically and expressively there were quite a few who surpassed her. that is common knowledge. but vocally she reigns on a throne nobody can touch. of course there are many others i like just as much as sutherland. but not for the exact same reason. i like no singer for the exact same reason as any other. callas, tebaldi, schwarzkopf, flagstadt, fleming, janowitz, deutekom, moser. none could replace the other at their game. and also callas had flaws. severe ones even. her belcanto technique was stellar. sadly she screamed her voice to shards in no time singing stuff way too heavy way too early. she sang isolde, brünnhilde, turandot, aida, all well before she turned 30. ridiculous. she severely overused and overpushed her dramatic capabilities. which she had. certainly. but in her core she was a coloratura singer. not a dramatic singer. nobody will change my mind about that. the proof is in the records. it is obvious what happened to her voice. what she was able to do until the very early 50s is miraculous. but she payed a bitter price for it. and i also stick to my opinion that sutherland had the greatest singing voice of the recorded age. not the best diction, not the most vibrant drama or expression. but her sound was just beyond. and she had it naturally. the longevity of her voice is proof enough. and in her final singing decade she certainly would have been able to pull off isolde or brünnhilde. with the right coach. her voice always was enormous. but in her later years it lost its brilliance and youth, but gained a lot of size and weight. anyhow, in the end i just enjoy listening to all kinds of stuff and all opinions do not matter.

I just want to say something. Joan Sutherland has always been my favorite. From a young girl. But we shouldn't compare ourselves to her. She was amazing technically naturally for sure. But well her husband who was her coach let her away with a lot ...she admitted languages were not her thing ..and she knew her diction was bad this was partly to do with issues with her teeth and sinuses ..but also because she sacrificed diction for sound. I remember her given a lesson to a soprano and saying she got away with it ...but you can't hold your face in a perma smile masking etc ..like a mouth full of marbles today. Diction takes from sound ...teachers today would never let you away with this...getting sound is one thing ..getting sound around diction ..another. Singing through italian ..is harder than speaking italian! Honestly tho..this sound was so so so worth it.

She always said that for her, it was a balance between trying to achieve a creamy legato and enunciating every syllable. When she first started singing, she sounded very Germanic in style; not right for bel canto. So her husband Richard Bonynge spent time coaching her on the bel canto repertoire, and thus she eventually mastered the silken legato . However, Dame Joan said that was the cause of all the “mushy diction” complaints from critics, as for her it was quite difficult to enunciate, particularly in the upper register. As she was a woman who was not a native speaker of a Romance language, I understand how she would not be able to recite the words the same was as Pavarotti, obviously a native Italian. And really, I am here for her vocal abilities, not her ability to speak Italian. She makes the hairs on my arm stand up every time she hits a high Eb or E!

Informative. Your passion for music is evident. Thanks

Yes, we know she sacrificed diction for sound. That was in 1961 and was a conscious decision. I don't really think it was necessary. She never sounded 'Germanic" to me; just listen to her 1959 EMI Don Giovanni or astounding Decca 1960 set 'Art of the Prima Donna'. In this 'Sempre libera', we get fine diction as well as the amazing voice. When was this done?

La Stupenda sang as no other dramatic coloratura (I'm sure) before and certainly after her. She attempted and accomplished things with her voice other sopranos today dare not even attempt, as the demonstrated by the 12 staccato high C's at the end of this performance. Many also complained of her diction, but most of those complaints came from people who most likely did not even know the libretti! The greatness of her singing has yet to be matched!!!
