The 50 years old Joan Sutherland opens the new Met Season as Elvira in Puritani with Luciano Pavarotti and they bring the house down!!! The video is from Uncle Louies's Amazing Collection and I have join it with the sound of the Broadcast!! Hope to enjoy!!!

Joan's voice never was captured very well in studio recordings, even official records from opera houses. The real size and loudness fills every corner of the theatre and we can feel that only listening to those amateur recordings.

@@crazyorganist1609I think Flagstad, Nilsson, and Price come close. Ponselle is a fabrication because nobody really knows what she sounded like and her high notes were suspect at best. Sills, Pons? Please. Galli-Curci extremely one dimensional.

Fantastic to see her from the wings, even if obscured. Yes, it was a great pity The Met did not record the 1970s Sutherland performances. I believe they piloted the process with Hoffmann but due to technical problems it never happened and then we lost Esclarmonde and Puritani. The Don Giovanni from 1978 is preserved and Lucia from 1982 which are marvelous if late in her career. It's surprising that there are so few videos of her in her absolute prime in her major roles. I guess the technology wasn't ready.

OperaMyWorld - There will never be another singer like Joan Sutherland. Allow me one correction - this production did not open the new Met Season. The production premiered in February 1976 and the Met season always begins in September.
