I consider myself a semi-pro fly fisherman and I have to be honest and say I learned a thing or two. I have been fly Fishing since I was 6, I'm 43 now. Self taught but I manage fairly well. It's never too late to take a refresher class and get rid of some bad habits. I have certainly never thought of it as opening a screen door. More like driving a nail. But, I think your description is much more accurate/correct and has helped my cast. Thank you!

Like so many things - athletics, culinary knife skills for example, proper technique is key (KEY!). I find myself at times, wrestling the line and powering it like a mad man only to achieve twenty feet. Conversely; relaxed, smooth, proper and near effortless execution throughout the cast and a nice, tight loop whips forward over the shoulder stripping three or four times the line ...an elegant unrolling that gently drops upon the water - - a moment of calm observed before a slight strip that ignites a thunderous disturbance of the waters surface .. BANG! The fight is on! Yes, technique is absolutely key!

The straight up casting style, i found was much easier to learn then sideways casting. You can stare down the rod nearly perfectly and see your line better and what improvements you can make. Though in the wind you better have fast reflexes to dodge them flies comin right at you and ALWAYS crimp the barb or you'll be sorry

NRX, blah, blah. Mrs, Wulff taught me and a bunch of others in a clinic at their facility back in 1978. She is as smooth now as she was then. The equipment has no effect on her effectiveness. None of you probably remember bamboo, but her husband Lee loved short rods for a bunch of reasons, and he was as fast and accurate with bamboo as I might be with the latest Sage Zero, and I'm pretty decent. So was, is, she. And did I mention delightful? Just sayin'.

I just started fly fishing. I’m horrible at it..but I do catch a lot of pan fish. Which I guess makes it fun. Is fly casting a hard thing to learn that takes time? Do I need to just keep at it?

Fly casting is something you can get better at for your entire life. The great thing is that there is no need to be an "expert." Find a style and a fish that suites you, and practice. In some ways it is like golf--the only important thing is that you are having fun.

It takes longer for some than others. The main thing is to get the basics down and not develop bad habits you have to unlearn. That doesn't necessarily take much time at all. You can refine your casting all your life, but with solid basics you're good to go. If you're catching fish and looking at this video you're probably off to a good start.

Keep at it. Practice on grass or a lake. Look up Doug Swisher basic fly casting, thats how I learned. Plenty of practice will pay huge on the water. HOOOOOOOKKK UUUUPPPPPPP

I'm a little confused here. Please help me. I have been told that you should under no circumstanses ben your wrist when fly casting, but you are in fact bending your wrist here. Apparently I got something wrong?

What they are trying to tell you is that you should not just use your wrist you have to also have to use your four arm.... Joan is just saying snap your wrist at a 45 degree angle to get the line behind you at 11 o'clock in the air and when the loop has unravled behind you snap back in front of you closing the 45 degree angle at 2 o'clock

You raise the rod and snap it back behind you, all in one swift movement, but as she says don't "yank" the line off the water, as the splash frightens off the fish. Now, if someone was standing on your right hand side they are waiting to see the rod tip come to the 10 o'clock position behind you and the two o'clock position on the forward cast. When your forearm is straight up you can't get a 10 o'clock position behind you, the rod tip will be straight up in the air. So, you flip your wrist to 45 degrees to complete the arc and angle. Then bring your wrist straight and again in one movement, move your forearm forward, stopping dead at 2 o'clock, on the forward cast. When the fly hits the water, gently lower the rod tip allowing the rest of the line to gently rest on the water. What you DONT do, is get into the habit of flicking the wrist too far back or forward at all and relying on your wrist to give you the casting arc. All that will do, is throw the line on the ground behind you and in a heap in the front. As for landing the fly gently, watch some videos on here of guys casting and they think distance is the be all and end all. They simply end up throwing the line and lashing the water. The FLY should land GENTLY before the line lands, as the fly would land if it were real. In real life, you don't get a line splashing onto water followed by a fly!

Theres no magic way to make the leader extend fully. After you have a good loop/candy cane and a proper backcast(imperative for the loops shape) it's all about power application. Too much power and the loop hits the end of the line way way too soon, not enough and the loop will be pitiful and not turn over. Too strong a backcast the loop goes around 360 and either tangles or extends with the power of the gods and scares all the fish within 20km, too weak and the fly doesn't have enough power to turn over.

I cant stand how trout fishers cast, I can get a much better loop shape and line speed with a more saltwater style cast. She may know how to cast well in no wind at all but when she comes to the flats, she wont be able to get the line speed you need to punch your fly into the wind.
