FYI Patrick Olwell is generally regarded as the best Irish flute maker - Matt Molloy , June McCormack, Tom Doorley, Seamus Eagan, and most other professional Irish musicians play his flutes. In comparison, his keyless flutes are only $1500.00, although the waiting list is about a year. It’s worth it.

And keyless flutes by other top notch makers are in that same $1500 range.

Yay! I’ve been waiting to see your thoughts on some wooden flutes. To anyone who is really interested now but is daunted by the price: my own Irish flute is a keyless apple wood Sweetheart (now the brand Musique Morneaux), which I bought secondhand for $250. If you don’t want to make a huge investment but want to try one of these lovely flutes, the options are out there!

What a coincidence! Haha I just bought my first irish flute. Or so I thought.. haha It's used, the seller said it was in good condition and had a good sound. It has 5 keys, simple system, and was listed as 'antique irish flute'. Ok, so I bought it. Buuut, for my surprise (in a good way) it is a french ancient (LIKE AAANCIENT) flute. It's inscripted 'A.LECOMTE' (a maker from paris from the 19th century), and seems to had been made in 1874.. o.o I keep researching every now and then, to be sure, but it is the date inscripted and all. I am shocked, but happy. And yeah, it sounds awesome! Fantastic review, Jo! Keep the very good work! And hey, let's hear that nagahara mini, hum? haha ;D

YEEESSSS!!!!! THIS is what I wanted to see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BTW, the bottom hand fingering becomes much easier when you use something called a "piper grip" where you cover the holes with the middle joint of the bottom fingers instead of the tip. Much, much much easier on your hands. I've got big old piano paws, and I couldn't play a simple system flute without it. Now, we just have to get you one with keys!!!!!!

They do sound good, and there is so much joy to be had as an Irish flute player. So please dig deeper into that joy, but i really do think that price of 2500$ is asking a bit much, I have a Gilles Lehart, mopane flute, with copper rings and 6 keys, brand new, made for me, from France, for 2000$ even (including shipping), and it sounds professional as well. My suggestion would be to start with a Mcneela, rosewood, keyless flute for about 275$. I was so pleased with the way I sounded on that flute that I got addicted to it, after that, move onto professional quality flutes of your choosing. Maybe because this person made 20,000$ flutes, he thinks that 2500$ is acceptable? But in traditional irish music, a keyless flute for that price seems pretty unacceptable.
@chinechinecherie
@chinechinecherie 5 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking too... These do seem very nice, but are over-priced (not by just a little, but by about 10 times!) comparing to good quality Irish flutes you can find elsewhere.
@MrDavieRavie
@MrDavieRavie 5 жыл бұрын
@@chinechinecherie 10 times overpriced is a huuuuge exaggeration. I think around 1000 Dollar +/- 200 is the probably a typical price for a keyless "irish" flute in Blackwood and silver. Gilles Lehart flutes are one of the most affordable (and really nice) simple system flutes though . I wouldn't buy a wooden flute for 275 Dollar. Look for Sommer Delrin flutes or M&E Ebonite flutes. Both are nice polymer flutes, recommended as nice starter instruments by many players!
@jacebeleren1703
@jacebeleren1703 Жыл бұрын
@@MrDavieRavie You can absolutely get a nice wooden flute for less than 1000$, that is more of the top of the range, there's a few very good makers around the 500-700$ mark.

I've been thinking a lot about an Irish flute, so this is a perfectly timed review. I was concerned that the fingering would be radically different, but I am surprised by that chart to see that the fingerings are largely the same. Nothing for the pinkie to do though, that's weird. I want one of these.

Yeah, wooden flutes have quite the maintenance regime. I've got a B-flat 5-key flute made in Northern Ireland, and it really doesn't like the dry climate of Sydney, Australia. So it now lives in a sealed box with a moist sponge and a humidity meter and I still have to give it regular oiling and almost daily wipe-downs.

Its a strange thing - but the irish flute is played in a different way than the classical flute. You blow here like a classical flautist - an Irish trad player, would blow more down into the hole, focus the air a bit more, and maybe cover the blowhole more with the lower lip - this gives a quite distinct difference in tone - a more buzzing sound, more bark! :)

Subtitle: Joanna hugs a flute. Sadly, not a fair test with just two. Windward have a variety of wood selections and many shapes of embouchure holes for a wide range of sounds. If you're considering one, meet them at a flute fair or folk/Celtic festival.

Holy cow they’re expensive! 😳 Usually you can get a gorgeous handmade instrument by a renowned maker for about 1000$. For 2500 I’d expect it to have at least a few keys 😅 Anyway, was fun to see a classically trained flutist try a folk flute. Reminded me so much of my first time playing an irish flute ☺️

I have a keyless Pratten in olive and am in their queue for a seven key Pratten in pink ivory. Can’t wait!

I’m wondering if the price listed is in Canadian because if you go to their website, all the prices are about the same but in Canadian. With the current conversion rates, the keyless Windwards would be about the same as a keyless Olwell bought new.

LOL...reaction, priceless. Your fingers will stretch. Windward flutes are good. Be careful swabbing inside of your keyed flute, oil can gum up the keys and then you have to get pads replaced 😒. I was a bit surprised at the price, is that Canadian? My Olwell was about 1650. My Irish flutes are made from African blackwood/grenadilla, and cocus. In Irish music a big bore flute made from Blackwood is generally preferred bc you need a big reedy sound to play with other loud instruments.

@vaboone
@vaboone Жыл бұрын
@@PeterEvans_music Olwell flutes in my book are the best American made Traditional Irish flutes. They have that big sound, easy to get a sound (provided you are used to playing wood headjoints that have more resistance than the average boehm flute). Because they are so sought after, they hold their value. I have played flutes by Rudal, Hamilton, windward, Grinter, McGee, Metzler style, and various “cheap” flutes, ….the only one I’ve played that come close are McGee (Australian).

@sophiamoe9286

I hope because of the advancement of technology, The Irish flute makers will create the (Alto, Tenor (former bass), Baritone (Contralto), Bass (former contrabass), and Contrabass (former double contrabass) etc) flutes in a serpentine style with low G footjoints made out of 3D printing or Blackwood. They’ll use simple fingerings and ornaments. They’ll have swan neck horizontal embouchures and headjoints. They will be held vertically. Boehm-system versions of these instruments will also be available. The most common of these will be the tenor size (an octave below the standard D flute)!!!! It’ll be innovative!! They’ll be called serpent flutes!!!!

Traditional Irish Flute playing does not really focus on a lot of tonguing. It's all about fingerwork and a lot of tunes are flat-out slurred.

You don't tongue in Irish music, you use glottal stops and you very rarely if ever go into the third octave. The tone you look for is a hard reedy tone, definitely not a sweet one.

@johnxavier8732
@johnxavier8732 Жыл бұрын
@@PeterEvans_music I Respectfully disagree friend. If she can put her fingertips on the holes, as she demonstrated, she can easily use the piper's grip. I can play low whistles that I would never be able to play with my finger- tips, but I can easily manage with the pipers grip. A pipers grip is used also because for low whistle or Irish keyless flute, it is simply ergonomically way easier, I'm sure you won't agree, but such have been my studied observations, regards friend.
