If you want the crackle effect, chalkpaint your base color & let it dry. The paint the areas you want to see crackle with plain while school glue. Let it start to get tacky, but not dry, then paint your top color chalk paint right over it. It your base was brown & your top was white, you'll see white with brown in the cracks.
