5th Grade Math 11.8, Volume of Rectangular Prisms, Base Area & Height

The base of a rectangular prism is a rectangle. We know that area is measured in square units, or units squared, and that the area of a rectangle can be found by multiplying the length and the width. Volume is measured in cubic units, or units cubed. When we build a prism and add each layer of cubes, we are adding a third dimension, height. Since we're counting the amount of cubes, volume is measured in cubic units. Area is the number of square units we need to cover a two-dimensional surface, a flat surface. We use length and width to find area. Volume is the number of cubic units we need to fill a three-dimensional space. We use length, width, and height. We can find the volume of a prism in cubic units by multiplying the number of square units in the base shape, by the number of layers (its height). We can complete a table of values with sequences and their relating rule to show the height in layers compared to the volume in cubic units of rectangular prisms, and their relating rule. When we double the measure of each cube edge from 1 unit to 2 units, the volume becomes 8 times greater. The area of the base uses a 2 as an exponent because we multiply 2 dimensions, length and width. The volume uses a 3 exponent because we multiply 3 dimensions, length, width, and height. If we double one of the dimensions of a rectangular prism, the volume will double.
