This is a scene from Satyajit Ray’s movie “ Pratidwandi “ ( means ‘ Adversary ‘ ). This is early ‘70s during Vietnam War when the whole world was anguished with high handed ness of USA and courage shown by the Vietnamese people. Even Marlon Brando had made a movie on Vietnam called ‘ Archipelago’! Ray’s Hero is asked what is the most notable event of the Century when he says it is the courage of Vietnamese people. The Interviewer is surprised and asks is it more noteworthy than say ‘man’s landing on moon’ which he says was expected but not Vietnamese courage against USA might!! The Interviewer asks are u a Communist ? To which he gives a famous reply “ You don’t have to be a Communist to appreciate courage of Vietnamese people” !! Ray was a genius movie maker !!

Accent is an amalgamation of your exposure to different cultures, the people you grew up with, environment you grew up in and other influences..so people develop an accent over time. We are not born with it. It's very unique to a particular person and everybody has their own accent. "Translanctic" or "Indian" or any such categorical placement of an accent, I find it bizarre, yes you can have predominant influences of a particular way of speaking.. but based on that it's illogical to call it Fake or real.

Yeah..he just got rejected for praising Vietnam war over landing on the Moon(although Moon's topic is still debatable). I mean, he had the knowledge and all that specifications that the job required.

Well. He put the interviewer's perspective in the most minimalist way. Communists were, and still are, a menace. Communists singlehandedly shut down 90% of factories in West Bengal. Ray was not oblivious to this. So he put a very succinct question from the interviewer's point of view. It was only natural that any interviewer would be suspicious of a candidate with leftist leanings. Ray did a brilliant job in the interview by showing up both three sides with minimalist elegance. An emotional and hopeful youth seeking a job, a cautious and conservative employer and the turbulent political background of the time.

@@souravdutta9203 just because the competition was not that much high. The population was half of what it is today. You will find more than 90% of the unemployed citizen to be at least graduate. Now everyone is pursuing PhD whereas great scientist, Satyandranath Bose didn't win a Nobel prize as he didn't have PhD degree. However he was equivalent to Einstein in terms of quantum physics and had a great contribution to the field. He even found Bose-Einstien condensate-the fifth form of matter apart from Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma in collaboration with Einstein. So, basically any degree nowadays is useless..it was also useless in the 1970s when Educated youths were unemployed..but the level of unemployment was not as much as it is today.

At that time teachers were educated in British period so the students got good knowledge of English. But now after left front's nasty decision of removing English as a language in primary level of education system modern generation of West Bengal lost the spark in English. This was the opening sequence of the film "Pratidwandi" ("The Adversary", also sometimes known as "Siddhartha and the city"). This was Dhritiman Chatterjee's (the interviewee in the video) debut movie. His character's name was Siddhartha Chatterjee in the film. The final scene in the movie has a bird's call which Satyajit Ray recorded for real in a forest many years before shooting this film and used it here.

Deeply meaningful movie. Whose independence ? was a piercing counter question for which interviewer probably was not prepared or he was not expecting it. Communist movement was gathering momentum in Bengal in those days and an intellectual like Ray could not dissociate himself from it. There is an enigma attached to Satyajit Ray, whether he really supported communism in it's Russian version where trade unions once rule the roost.

Though embedded inside thin layers and most probably could not be identified by many below a certain intellect level, still politics played a major and subtle role in contemporary Bengali movies by the masters. Watch this film if you can. It's the part of Satyajit Ray's Calcutta Trilogy which consists of three films: 1.Pratidwandi, 2.Seemabaddha 3.Jana Aranya All of them are great works. Something which is most fascinating about this trilogy is an ambiguous Black/Dark humour!!!

But it was shot during 1970 a year before Bangladesh was liberated. Btw why Vietnam war was more preferable is answered in this scene by Siddhartha. Simply, it was the exhibition of courage and bravery by the peasants who had no warfare skills, no artillery, no armaments. And one do not needs to be a Leftist to admire that but needs to be a keen observer which he might have acquired as he was a student of medicine and we need keen observation skills to understand biology.

the beautiful English he spoke bereft of colonial English accent but carrying the subtilty of Hindi/Bengali is so soothing. Over years we have forgot to talk slowly. the melody of our mother tongues are lost. We have become more aggressive. Thus, this tone-deaf accent we have got.
