I am a woodworker/cabinetmaker/contractor. I have been in the business for 43 years. I just want to send out a word of encouragement to women who are considering a trade career. I had a woman working for me at one time and I have to say that there were some positive differences. She would take direction without argument, was a quick study and was very good with my clients as well. A lot less ego and competitive attitude than the guys. It can be physical, but working alone I have had to develop creative ways to get things done too. A note to both sexes: as a rookie expect some teasing and razing, it is all part of paying your dues and nothing personal. There were plenty of practical jokes. I remember well being at the bottom of a crew, smile, take it in stride, do your best, but don't try so hard that you goof up either. Be a sponge and learn.

Shot in the dark here but im interested in cabinetmaking but don't know where to start. Do I need to go to a trade school to start or can you apprentice at a company, where should I start. I'm 22 and I'm in Georgia

I've applied to become a cabinetmaker without any prior experience but I know for a fact I like working with wood as well and I do want to learn. The company that's hiring says they take all skill levels and are willing to train, but I'm scared they won't accept me.
@sanyakennedy1689 Жыл бұрын
Did they accept you?
@Savsgames Жыл бұрын
@@sanyakennedy1689 No, they didn't because I have no prior experience, even though they advertised they'd train me. So instead I've holed up in home depot while I wait for fall semester to begin.

hello sir are you still looking for an applicant like me who is a foreigner worker. I live here in the Philippines. I worked as an assembler as a cabinet maker in a furniture shop, but I am interested in learning to improve my knowledge of making cabinet makers. I hope to apply to your company in Canada.

"there's only two types of cabinet maker - those with bad backs and those who haven't had the injury yet!" - that's a 'bad' joke but what Lynn says is true you need to learn to be smart about moving heavy or awkward items - if you actually look at the back muscles they're are incredibly vulnerable - get good training and bend those knees not your back!
@rossgeography3 жыл бұрын
also.. wear ear defenders at all times - there is a lot of occupational deafness in the trades - in a workshop it can be insidious because the noise may be bearable but it's your exposure time that does the damage!
