For those who don't speak Italian or Spanish:- Cardinal Tedesco (the angry Italian) was ranting about the consequences of a liberal Church and how the next pope must lead a religious war against Islam. Cardinal Benitez (the calm Mexican) was chastising Tedesco for his bloodthirstiness and reminded him that the true enemy of the Church was hatred, and the true face of the Church was not tradition, but "what we do next".

When I heard the cardinal talking in Spanish, I teared a bit. How many movies of popes, Christ, kings, queens, romans, etc. Not a single voice in Spanish. Ever. Yet, we are a huge amount of the Roman Catholic church. It was about time. Gracias!! BTW Good to see other languages too.
@blockm64112 күн бұрын
Firstly, you are making a huge assumption with little to go on, namely that all the cardinals understand Spanish, which may not be necessarily accurate. If that were the case, it would have made more sense if he did so in Latin or Italian. The reason may be a simpler, more practical one: the Mexican actor playing the part, with no major previous acting experience, while he speaks English had no experience delivering a major, critical scene in English. Simply put, this inexperienced actor did not feel entirely comfortable delivering this critical speech in any language other than his own.

A great movie until the Hollywood ending. Wonderful actors, fantastic dialogue, and what strikes me as a very accurate portrayal of what must really happen when one of the world's most powerful positions comes open. Lots of political nastiness. I won't spoil the ending, but the person who wins at the end is absolutely absurd. Anyone who knows that cardinal law who was basically thrown out of Boston by his own diocese after covering up sexual abuse by the church for 30 years, until his death was reassigned at one of the most prestigious cathedrals in Rome. That's how the Catholic Church really works. But Holly would need an ending that would not leave Catholics up in arms. Until the last 10 minutes though a wonderfully entertaining movie.
