Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Review: A Worthy Apes Movie?

It was never going to be easy following up the pretty damn good Apes trilogy 20th Century Fox put out a little while back. Many forget that director Matt Reeves, who was elevated to the A-list thanks to his work on those films, actually only directed the second and third films of the trilogy, with Rupert Wyatt directing the first film, which wasn’t quite the epic the other two were. In fact, I’d even go so far as to say it was a kind of shaky start to what ended up being an amazing trilogy, so as such, I went into Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes willing to cut the former Maze Runner director a lot of slack. Happily, Ball ended up making a good Planet of the Apes movie; even if it's not quite the masterpiece, some of those breathless early reactions teased.

@@JoBloOriginals imHo, the magic of "rise" is that that's our world, trailer spoils aside, you think you're watching one movie and suddenly you realize "HFS, this is planet of the apes begins, and IDGAF if that's James Franco, that's Cesar". So, for me, that makes it the most relatable, and most interesting....for your ranking.

Andrew Lesnies camerawork is just energetic and Andy Serkis' performance simply iconic. It is the groundwork for the trilogy and a great foundation to build on.

Only a few hundred years have gone by though. The original was set 2000 years later. Too early for the astronaughts to land yet. The apes havent even started wearing those iconic clothes yet. Unless of course, these films are not going to go there, and be radically different. Personally, I would like this trilogy to be more like the 'middle ages' of the whole saga, and a third trilogy in a few years time start with a remake of the original film. And the last two be better sequals to it than the original sequals were in the 70's.

Rise is more of a personal story with less characters and that's what i liked about that movie and i think like it more than the other 2 just by a little ....just a little, but the original trilogy is superb.

The Planet of the Apes saga is to me what Star Wars is to many others. I love them and I am grateful that every movie ist its own thing. If you like your postapocalyptic adventures atmospheric and rusty, then check out HOPE AND GLORY, a Mad Max film. Yes, it is fan made, but don't let that fool you. It really is something to behold.

Good points. Would have been interesting if instead Ceaser would have gotten what he wanted at the end of Kingdom though. Mya could still have gotten her goal, but perhaps some of the human tech was recovered and the apes use it to advance, push the humans underground in a new movie that mirrors Beneath the Planet of the Apes.

I remember watching the tv show as a kid too, anyway seeing that ape with a falcon or Eagle reminded me how ive always wanted to see the apes with loyal dogs in one of these movies, trained dogs that would absolutely rip humans apart if commended, the dynamic of having an ape on a horse with a wolf running along side would show the apes harmony with nature & other animals that would once have been predator or prey now understanding intelligence, any animal man has tamed & raised the apes should also be able to, no? Id rather see them feeding and playing with a bear than fighting one for example.

I felt this movie was too focused on setting up a trilogy, and not as interested in being a strong movie on its own. It's the same for most movies based on books that are split into two films. The first half is all setup with no payoff and the second is all payoff with no setup.

My biggest issue is with the implication that we are in for a bunch more films of apes vs humans. That frustrates me. I'd really rather a period where humans and apes actually do make it work for a long time. Than eventually erodes into old power grabs. Or just ape centric stories. No humans in the equation, or briefly. I'm so sick of human kind right now. Having us be footnotes is actually refreshing. I mean is anyone actually rooting for humans to make a comeback. It would have also been a refreshing change of pace to have a female ape take the helm. Hope that can still happen. Don't come at me with it being unrealistic to ape behavior. If thats a limitation to imagination, than we are not very good at 'imaginating". A lead up to Zira being a bad ass figure.
