Hi Dr. Martin, thanks for the detailed information! It is really helpful for me to better understand what it means to work in the global health space. Can you talk about what we should think about when choosing a Global Health (or MPH) program? Also, would you recommend getting an MD as well as an MPH to increase credibility?
@gregmartin8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Michelle. In terms of what to think about when choosing an MPH or Global Health program - I'm going to have to make a whole video about that (too much to cover here) - so stay tuned. Re doing an MD for credibility, no, you don't need an MD. There is nothing wrong with getting an MD (I have one) but don't do it just for credibility (its a lot of extra work for a marginal pay off in that sense). There are certain aspects of public health for which being a medical doctor is useful (I'll do a video about that sometime too I guess). Figure out what it is that you want to do and get the right education for that purpose. Then work hard, do an excellent job at whatever you do and you'll get the recognition and credibility that you need. I hope that that helps. Happy day, Greg

Hi Alex - I'm delight to see people like yourself interested in public health. The health and MBA combination is extremely useful (I did an MBA too). @gregmartin8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question - actually its a really good question. Young people starting out will very often want to go and work for the WHO or the World Bank. Its not easy to get work with these organisations and there are usually very strict "experience" criteria associated with the jobs. If you're starting out, I'd suggest that you find an NGO (even something local) and focus on developing useful skills. Thanks for the question and GOOD LUCK! :)

HI Dana.. well, a good place to start would be to do a Masters degree (if you already have a primary degree). As I mentioned in the video, the University of Notre Dame have a great program. In terms of internships and work, it would depend to an extent on your area of interest. Try to find something that you're passionate about. Thank you for this video! I am a mid-career epi and I am looking for a change. I have been working in a Tribal Epidemiology Center for the past 15 years, and I am having trouble visualizing where I fit within the larger public health world. I feel like my skill set is so oddly specialized (and, paradoxically, not specialized) that I am not qualified for many of the opportunities currently available. Any pointers on this?
@gregmartin6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the interesting question. I think that what you need to focus on is those skills that you have that are "transferable" (in other words, can be applied in any or other situations). Think about how to describe yourself in those terms when you apply for jobs. You'll probably find that many of your skills and competencies are transferable.

I am very motived to pursue a degree inMs in Global Health, but am extremely conscious about my age, and how employable I may be . Have you met or encountered anyone close to my age and embarked on a career change or shift like I desire? Alos, how important if I would pursue this degree the program I chose? US schools are very expensive, but would it make a difference in my case? I would greatly appreaciate your opinion. Tania Florez

Thank you so much for putting these videos together for us. They are very informative. Is obtaining a degree in global health the same as obtaining an MPH degree in global health? I am just asking because I looked At the University of Notre Dame's website and only saw global health listed as one of their graduate program. If not, where can one work with a degree in MPH global health?
@gregmartin7 жыл бұрын
Hi there - if I understand your question correctly, you're wonder if there is a difference (in terms of getting jobs) between getting an MPH (in global health) and an Master of Science in Global Health (offered by Notre Dame). In terms of making you eligible for getting a job down the line these two types of degrees are the same. if you look at webpages like the WHO, you'll often see a requirement of an MPH or equivalent. Hope that helps.

Dear Caleb - thanks for the question. The truth is, I don't really know what the probability of getting a job following an MPH is. I know that the job market is competitive and that it can be difficult to get a job (especially if you are unable to travel due to family commitments, for example). That said, an MPH does open up a lot of doors and can be an important stepping stole for your career going forwards.

Thank you Greg for creating this video. I have found in the past when connecting to senior public health workers they've tended to give me the 'list' straight away, which is less helpful then a well-rounded action plan of the organisation, targeting your networking strategies and application efforts. Many thanks!

please help me, should i do a 1 year or 2 year ms global health?
@gregmartin8 жыл бұрын
Hi there - I think that it depends largely on the programmes and what you want to get out of them. Most courses are one year. Two years could be expensive (especially given the loss of earnings).

thank you for your reply, but do employers really insist on whether one have 1 or 2 years?

Hi Anekwe - thanks for the question. Global health desperately needs people with a strong understanding of microbiology. I'm sure that your background will stand you in good stead when you apply to do a masters in global health. Good luck!

Yes - you certainly can. When applying for jobs however, keep in mind that most jobs require that you have a certain amount of hands on experience.

This is really a great video, and very eye opening. I really appreciate your effort. I’m a public health major and was wondering if there is much difference between public health and global health? As a public health graduate is it possible to work in World Health Organizations? Thank you very much!
@gregmartin6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great question Neriah - absolutely. If you study 'public health' you'll be well equipped to get involved with global health issues. To get a job at the WHO, you may need to get some work experience first, but that will come. Good luck!!
