I love being 91D and I know my shit from fixing gens to small power grids etc. Points have been max for E6 for ever. Only other MOS I'd go to is 12p but I'm to retarded and couldn't up my GT score. I also don't want E6. I like my hands dirty and also teaching soldiers. Also retarded that I need to do college to be promoted. I'm not wasting my personal time for that shit. So I'll be accepting my severance pay in a year.

It was pretty well explained in this video, but basically, any MOS that is 'newer' or just has less overall soldiers assigned to it will generally give promotions faster simply because there are more open slots for new NCOs to fill. A general rule of thumb is to look at whatever the MOS with the highest required ASVAB scores is that you qualified for. The higher the entrance standard, the less competition you will generally have. Also keep in mind that certain MOSs, especially those with longer AIT times, will actually give promotion points for finishing all of your training meaning that in some cases, as long as you go to the board you are pretty much set up for an easy promotion.
@Nimreitz
@Nimreitz 2 жыл бұрын
That is absolutely terrible advice. People never leave those jobs. The fastest promotions come from the biggest MOSes and the suckiest MOSes because there are a million slots and people get out all the time.

I just hit E4 two months ago as a 68W. Other medics always complain that its a pain to get promoted but it doesn't look too bad at the moment. And getting E6 from what Ive seen and heard is pretty easy just gotta do your time as an E5 and go to the board and ALC to get that rocker.

@@samuelvigue3472 basic and AIT are way different from when I went though. @@djfive-seven563 Finished 68W AIT in Sept 2019. Honestly, I left feeling like I wasn't ready when I graduated. Everything felt rushed and most of it was death by PowerPoint, which isn't a good way of teaching. If I had the power to change it I'd make 68W AIT 20 weeks as apposed to 16 with more hands on practice on a wider array of potential injuries. We were also told by our instructors and DS that we would learn more stuff when we got to our units, but that hasn't been the case in my unit despite me asking for more training almost daily.

I don't know if this MOS is still around, but 57 Echo (Laundry and Bath Specialist) was an MOS in the early 90's you could rank up very fast. Back in 1993, this MOS E-5 and E-6 cut - off scores were rock bottom at 450 for several months. If you were promotable (been to the E5 and E6 board), you would be promoted.

this was a good video. Another thing a person can look at is the under, at strength and over strength MOSs to get a sense of when the cutoff may change, Example is if 31B is understrength in E4 and below but at strength at E5 and E6 then the cutoff scores may stay high for E5 and E6. If that MOS laters becomes understrength at E5 or E6 then the cutoff scores will drop just enough to pick up just enough promotables on the list to get the MOS back to at strength. And the cutoff scores will go back up to even as high as 798.

I agree choose something you’ll enjoy, when I first joined I was a cook. Yes it’s a star MOS and you can rank up fast in it but is it worth working from 0400-2100? Holidays? 4 day weekends? Weekends?? I then reclassed to a 91C and everybody always told me I made a big mistake by going to maintenance, well that’s their opinion. But I love my new job, the only downfall is points for my MOS is always maxed, excluding this month it’s at 512. But I love my job, and I work a 9-5. I used to work 16+ hours a day and people tell me I made a mistake from switching to a 9-5 and I get my weekends and holidays. This is my 5th holiday season in the army and it’s the 1st that I’m actually home for!!

My understanding of points is if the army has 10 slots for E5 in a specific mos, then they army at the 10th highest e4 promotable's points and set the cut off score to that number. That way the army promotes those 4 soilders for that month and that is it.
@Nimreitz
@Nimreitz 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's exactly right. The advice in this video is not great, and looking at cutoff scores for any single month is not a good indication for ease of promotion. HRC publishes quarterly promotion projections every quarter; looking at the last few of those is a much better way to tell.
@raymondjoseph7177
@raymondjoseph7177 3 жыл бұрын
If anyone was thinking to go guard. Keep in mind there has to be an open slot in a unit in your state. You also have to get the points. But if there's no slot you can be #1 on the list for 10 years and never get promoted. Some states only have a certain amount of slots based on mos. I was an e5 for 10 years before my state got an e6 slot because the mtoe changed and the state was provide with 3 additional slots at that rank. This is why you see 35 yr old e4's in the guard. They either have to get out of the guard or move out of their state.

Nope, basic is required foe West Point bandsmen. I've known several Point bandsmen in my 20yrs as a French Horn player. AIT should be a quick pass through because of the high skill level. Honestly, the best MOSes to get promoted quickly are the combat MOSes because there's high turnover and a lot of slots. People don't leave the good jobs (and there are just fewer slots in general), but they sure as hell get out of the army as 11B/19D/13B/13F.

I'd advise a fit, stable young man to go into the combat arms for 2yr 3yr first. Then either ETS or re-class. Go into a reserve, NG unit. You get rank, learn how the basic army works, have weekends, holidays off, get awards. If you want to be SOF, a pilot, CIDC agent, etc you can get a new MOS.

I was an Operations Specialist (a.k.a. a Radarman) in the Navy after the Vietnam War. Our manning levels were consistently 65% below what the Navy needed to effectively keep a ship underway and at sea. As a result, when it came time for the advancement exam, if you could spell your name right, get your social security number correct and "pass" the exam, you got promoted. My advice to anyone who is contemplating joining the military, look very carefully at the manning levels of the Ratings/MOS's you are qualified for. If the job is over staffed, your chances of promotion are slim. If the job has a history of retaining quality servicemembers, your chances of promotion and a rewarding career are high. was in over 6 years and my MOS was locked at 798 for E5 for just short of 6 years. Made E4 from E1 in 18 months (at the time the fastest I could have). Made E4P at second duty station and CPL at 3rd. Finally made E5 points (4th DS) 2 months before ETS and turned it down ( not enough time left to accept without extending or reenlisting). Things change, picking an MOS on this is not wise unless you really look at the history like Chris said...

In my opinion when it comes to getting a higher rank faster in the military it helps if you are or become a active duty soldier. Aka a full time on the job soldier. Part time soldiers get promoted slower because they are not in the field longer. Which means they aren't getting the work or putting in the work as much.

I predate all that point crap. I was in the Time in Service, Time in Rank, and available slot era. For me it was E-2 out of basic for the top 10%, E-3 at 6 months TIS., E-4 at 1 year TIS , & 6 months TIR. E-5 at 18 months TIS, and 6 months TIR. E-6 at 3 years TIS and 1 year TIR. I was in the next higher rank slot the entire time. A lot depended on the slotting for the MOS. Mine was 32G in the ASA.

Use my laptop to run the CD-ROM program shamschool and use the main desktop detect my actual exams and matched up questions and answers accordingly, sometimes I even had gotten help from an NCO mine having a thumb drive that had a couple tests that have already done. Pick an MOS that you think you will enjoy. Yes some MOS rank up faster. But being a can scout or infantry may not be your element. Which will mean you probably will not stay in long term. I will also say MOS point structures change dramatically. It all depends on strength numbers per MOS. Or the need for the MOS to need SGT-SGM. Which is another great reason pick an MOS you will enjoy and will benefit you as a civilian. MOS is a situation we’re you are grinding your time. Because your schedule and life is now the army. If your playing numbers your likely to lose. You do have a possibility to change your MOS but that depends on your unit. If they care purely about the soldiers development and total soldiers concept you could get that approval. But highly unlikely.

No, the Infantry is not any more motivated to promote troops than any other MOS, combat arms jobs tend to be high turnover. Lots of troops end up hurt, medically reclassrd/discharged, people realizing they want to be in the rear with the gear etc, in addition to normal ETS losses. The Infantry typically has a rougher time of things than the majority of MOS's, lots of field time, heavy bodily toll from living out of a ruck, heavy loads etc, plus airborne/ air Assault injuries, staying healthy in the Infantry isn’t easy

I'm a veteran, 🎗, be realistic. If you enlist, decide what skills you want. What really motivates you. Medical? 🏥. Legal aid, law ⚖. Working with drones, UAVs aircraft systems? 🚁🛩🚀. Know too some army occupations require weekends, 12hr shifts, deployments, etc. A supply clerk working at Fort Swampy GA is not going to deploy or have the stress, demands of a Ranger at Fort Bragg NC. Some soldiers start AIT or work 1, 2 years then say: what the %=÷× am I doing? 🤦‍♂️

Where the Promotions (EST) are 0, we don't know how high the points requirements would be for an actual promotion when there is anyone eligible on the list. The cut off points are only meaningful if there are any actual promotions. On the other hand: If everyone eligible gets promoted, even a high cut off score wouldn't be a problem. Probably they would still promote the same 100% of eligible candidates if their points would be lower. The "no promotions now" so insanely high cutoff points just can happen even in an otherwise fast career tracks, if we would see data for a whole year and see how big percentage of eligible candidates get promoted (preferably in a secondary zone) that would show us a list where people can advance ranks quickly.
