Dave is a great addition to the team. He is also emotionally and socially intelligent enough (and a team player) to be value added as a third, and not as a second to Jocko. Echo is critical to this podcast, and you gotta make sure his voice is not moved aside. He provides the balance, humor, and intangibles that makes this podcast from good, to epic.

I think Echo also adds the need for Jocko and Dave to keep things in terms the layman will understand. I'm positive that if it were only Jocko and Dave they would devolve into military acronyms and lingo that would be lost on the average listener. Echo keeps it even.

It's a mark of a great communicator when they can talk about a topic in such a way that people who aren't from that field can still get a lot food for thought from it. Dave and Charles are really good speakers too.

@@raisedonmetal7984 I think it’s telling though of the state of our current government that the one’s who’s should stand up and do so resoundingly say no. Realistically, with a government filled with fools, liars and cheats, to be able to do any good as a genuinely solid human being is next to impossible. Not quite there, but you’d be facing insurmountable odds. I genuinely believe we’re at a pivotal point in history where nations which once stood mighty and proud will crumble, just as they have in the past. Our society is filled with debauchery and degeneracy and needs to be renewed. That will only come from the destruction of what currently is. Am I looking forward to it? Absolutely not. But I believe it’s the harsh reality we face in the relatively near future.

I'm in a STEM profession, and I've been in an artist professionally as well. One universal in both fields is that the "smartest" guy is never the best at delivering efficient results in time and under budget. Raw intelligence can be an impediment to pragmatic problem solving. Some problems require trade-offs which are inelegant. The Achilles heel of highly specialized intelligent people is that they desire consistency and elegance. But in the midst of a constantly shifting environment of computational problems (STEM) or indecisive art directors (art) the messy workaround achieves the deadline at the best looking end result. But it's a spectrum. Low short term costs usually yield mission critical long term failures. In programming, it's called "technical debt". It's when your quick specialized solution achieves a fast deadline but as iterations of similar problems interact with that code, each new problem requires an exception for a new special case. Eventually, the code becomes so unmanageable that changing one component requires updates to a vast unending string of dependent spaghetti code. If you only have one problem to solve one time and you know it will never be revisited then the specialized solution is fine. But if your code is part of a larger system, the more specialized the code, the more you have to revisit it for each new case. Eventually, the system becomes useless because of the man hours and technical know-how it requires to update dependencies makes delivery impossible. The failure creeps up exponentially. The first case is easy, so are the 2nd-4th. But the 5th case takes 2x the work of the 4th, and the 6th takes 4x the work of the 5th. The 7th special case yields system failure because it can't be accommodated in the allotted time. The judgement of the coder is in imagining the typical use cases in the near future and coding for those classes in the general case. There are always trade-offs. Intelligence isn't the difference between good programmers and great ones, imagination is. You have to be able to step into the mindset of your users and project how they'll interact with the system most of the time. Another problem of "geniuses" is that they don't document their code worth a damn. Their code is barely maintainable at all because you have to visually parse their code to understand what each function does. They also write code in a style which is quicker for them in their first version but utterly unmaintainable over time -- by them or anyone else. They don't code in a way which is beneficial for a team. I've met some genius coders but they always have shortcomings which make their work of less utility when it's placed among a team of developers or technicians who must update or configure the system.

I have not been in for long but I know and have seen how this plays out and it is scary at times. It’s like killing the queen ant in a platoon and trying to appoint a leader. Is there a sense in which this discussion implies a need to reduce points of childhood anxiety? Humans end up all sorts of ways for all sorts of reasons as you pointed out. But if a major source of military incompetence is the way in which past traumas bias future decision making towards bullshit, then logically it makes sense to ensure people have fewer childhood traumas such that they are ready to apply a better decision making ability to future stressors, especially war ones? It could be said "we need to be better adapted to stress" but therein lies my point. Bad adaptations to stress are often a result of experiencing too many traumas relative to the person. Since trauma is relative, it's not enough to assume that if every child has xyz legitimate adaptation strategies that they will all adapt the same to stressors, you will still need to make sure there age the right balance of stressors such that they do not disrupt the later life psyche. The other thing is these bullshit adaptations are essentially maltreatments of anxiety problems. So another point could be that getting rid of the adaptation without replacing it with a better adaptation may increase anxiety and reduce decision making quality even more. From bullshit to panic, for example. Whereas you want to get to the third place: quality decision making. You could finally say "we don't want people with these neuroses at all" and sure, but you also want a sizeable enough force. You don't want to lower the bar too far as has been pointed out through Vietnam. But you cannot set the bar too high intellectually for example. It could be most very calm people don't want to be destroyers in the way this discussion implied most people smart enough to build things don't want to be destroyers either. After all, the system that handles fear and anxiety is responsible for the will to fight. Without that system there is no fight. Do calm people (and not merely those who give the facade of it) typically want to get in fights and kill people?

Also, there is an interesting contradiction in the content of the book nad the interpretation given as it revolves around directness/indirectness and honesty/dishonesty. The logical fallacy is a problem of induction. The author specifically loaths *frontal assaults.* But he also loaths *lying to the troops to improve morale.* He upholds the notion that a reasoned and well researched argument and honest disclosure is best. Jocko interprets this as justifying his view that deception is better than direct honesty because he generalizes the author's loathing of frontal assaults to a general loathing of direct action whatsoever. Yet concurs that lying to improve morale is wrong. Jocko famously avoids taking absolute positions. So Jocko, when pressed, will often rely on the "not always! Sometimes, but it depends..." clause. Yet here he contradicts himself by wanting to tell the truth that hurts to the troops, while wanting to deceive, be indirect and avoid telling a straightforward truth or argument. The end result is probably that deception is most useful against an enemy and directness towards a friend. But this brings into question whether or not your boss is a friend or enemy, when deception isn't appropriate and when directness is in fact honourable and right. Usually not when approaching a machine gun position. But usually so when the friend deserves the truth. Colleagues and bosses are the inbetween place.
