What I love about Jocko’s mentality with his approach here is that it’s not so much that he does extraordinary things, but rather that he does the ordinary things extraordinarily well. His mentality definitely inspires me to up my game in what I do.

Agreed. It was also insightful to actually hear him admit that even he only has an hour of patience for reading and studying. Most people just let their limitations define them, but Jocko finds ways around them. Even when his mind accepts that certain weakness, he still uses it as an excuse to push forward anyway with scheduled brakes if needed. Most people do not have that mentality, but this world would be 100x better if they did.

I think a lot of it has to do with people thinking all books are like the harder ones you read in high school. Really most books that agree with your interests aren't going to be super complicated. Unless you exclusively like philosophy and classics...

All of the public intellectuals I admire started reading very early and still read voraciously. I consider myself fortunate to have that experience; and this flu quarantine isn't so bad, since I have books. Being well-read like that once was common in the US. Since Reagan, not so much. There's more good books, too. Lots of drivel, as well, as usual. This stay-at-home vacation we're going through makes catching up on your reading easy. You can get Kindle on your smartphone too easily to not have books with you all the time. READ A BOOK! ! !

Im a big fan of your channel and apreciate you having all the guests you do and hearing all of their amazing stories and knowing more about them and their experiences and sacrifices. Heros and great men and women in our country that have fought and died and gave their hearts and lives in service to our country..Sadly often times they seem they are used for that and forgotten when they come home by their govt and the people..but i hear the VA is getting better and i know its not about a pat on the back..they do it because they are good hearted people that really do care about this country and their countrymen and our freedom. i thank you for that and the motivation and inspiration and your example that you give and set and salute you and all of them as well..Better men and women than I. Thanks💜💙💜

Jocko, when you were describing your highlighting practice, I imagined using 3 colors for highlighting: Green = agreement with the idea in the book. Red = disagreement with the idea. Yellow = an idea new/unfamiliar to me. This would allow for enhanced visual indexing when skimming through the book, e.g., easier/quicker to find points of agreement, disagreement, and new information at a glance. Something to consider.

If you've read The Good Psychopath Guide to Life or it's sequel Sorted! by Andy McNab a former SAS operative and Professor Kevin Dutton , he talked about mental discipline, if you have a form to fill out, some paperwork , in his case gathering receipts and tax return for his accountant , he'll put the kettle on, lay out the things in front of him and try to get it done before the kettle boils. He always beats the whistle As he's also a writer he will take his laptop , go around to coffee shops and write a chapter , or half chapter or section, then move on to another place and do the same so it breaks it up by the journey from one place to another.

I feel like I understand, because when you're exercising, time goes fast as one thing leads to another, then another, then another. But with a mental labor like reading while sitting mostly still, the energy you are accustomed to expending all day every day just builds up in anticipation and becomes something like an itch that you have to scratch (or go crazy thinking about to the point of distracting you from your objective). Instead of fighting the urge to scratch, Jocko finds a way around it by scratching that itch at fixed intervals so that he can be relieved before breaking (mentally).

I can't do that either, its actually really bad for you both physically and mentally. As a college student, I always take frequent breaks during my study hours. Maybe 5 minutes every 40 minutes or so: Grab a cup of coffee, eat a snack, stretch for a bit, hydrate, etc. I work on my laptop all day and got used to staring at. random space for 20 seconds frequently, and then resume for work. That actually helps a lot for eye strain and headaches.

i have the exact opposite problem. If a task is going to take me less than 1 1/2 hours, I can't get started. Something that takes 8+? No problem. Generally I end up going too long. Not uncommon for me to read 500+ page books in one sitting, even if it means I forget to sleep or eat. So ironically I find it more difficult to get started on tasks that I have broken down into smaller parts.

Jocko how do I know I’ve reached fatigued during my workouts? When I can no longer perform the exercises in good form?
@cjin36804 жыл бұрын
Pretty much. Before your muscles fail to do the exercises, your technique will break. Muscle failure is when you can’t do the exercise no matter how much you cheat. Let‘s say you do 4 sets of bench presses (excluding your warmup sets). In the 1st and 2nd of these you get close to technique failure, the third one you can go further, because you don’t have more sets left. I always tell by how fast I can move the bar, when it slows down, I‘m getting close to failure

Hey Jocko and Echo- just read a book called Struggle For Power: The American Revolution that you might like. Author Theodore Draper who died in 2006 is brilliant guy. Christopher Hitchens recommended this as the best history book if he had to pick one. Like you guys, it gets to the truth behind what really happened. Draper gets into the real history they don't teach in school. Thanks for doing what you do! ( I am 65 years old but my 19 year old son turned me on to your podcasts. The Sun makes its “Circles” in the Sky, the Moon Rolls like an ETERNAL Wheel “through the days” and the nights, and children are born “be they” Flowers, Puppies, Kittens, Snakes, Roaches, Birds to Butterflies to UNICORNS where La La the Little Girl “whom saves” The World has already released the “Source Code” to heal any and all whom can just come to their Sereneness… My body, and your body, and “all bodies” from Wilde Life to Sea Life are TEMPORAL Body “Temple” Avatars……..., and if you can not “be kind” and gentle, then you will be treated with “every inch” of your Sickness, Madness, and Lunacy for in this REALITY’ only the Strong Win, and for any to think there is not “Strength” in OUR WORLD REPUBLIC CONSTITUTION Coalition, then you’m have never read “This Legal Document” we have all TAKEN A BLOOD OATH to Uphold and Honor… Johnny Exodice
