Thank you Jocko for your amazing podcast and my deepest respect for the warriors who are sharing their stories! I was 9 years old when I experienced the fall of Saigon. My father who worked with the Americans took me and my brother to our rooftop every night as we witnessed the approach of the VC on the city. As a kid witnessing the nightsky light up and the shockwaves reverberating through the air and the American jetfighter pilots screeching across the rooftops towards the approaching army will always stay with me. On the 6th of April the situation in Saigon got dire. Fear had gripped the city. My dad had a CB radio that he communicated with the Americans and I remember the frenetic chatter as we were told to evacuate. We had a window of 30 hours. We lost everything. I'll never forget the chaos, the madness to get to the only airport Tan Son Nhat. Towards and at the airport pandemic had ensued. I remember clear as a bell when a World Airways exploded on takeoff, killing many Americans and orphans on board. The pilots refused to take off. A pilot said... we're not taking off, the air is full of lead! We finally made it to Bangkok. My father stayed behind and was one of the last to leave the besieged city from the rooftop of the American Embassy. To this day I'm still trying to piece together what my father was involved in. I will never know, since I lost my dad one year later in a plane crash. So your podcast has helped me in so many ways of coming to a better understanding of these last days of Saigon through your amazing guests, warriors that I have the deepest respect for. Thank you!

Thanks! So many echos for me. My Dad was a USAF Aviation Cadet that same year, doing his training with Class 55K at Greenville, MS, and Bainbridge, GA. He flew F-100s out of Danang in 1964 and F4C Phantoms out of Cam Rahn Bay in 1965-66. He earned a DFC that second tour, flying close air support mostly in Laos but some in South Vietnam and bombing missions in North Vietnam. I'm so proud of you aviators and your commitment to fun and excellence.

Amazing, another outstanding episode... How can these pilots have no fear? I remember the book Chickenhawk about helicopters in Vietnam. So many good men died just flying the damn things in the states, before they were perfected, not to mention the many thousands shot down by the Vietnamese. At least the Jets were faster, but still incredibly dangerous.

You need an eficiency protocol! :) Basically for everything which can put ppls lives in danger (protective equipment, fuel, etc) the main consideration should be how to get it done the most efficiently. The rest of the equation needs to be secondary. For example: if I am loosing time, and loosing lives because production of personal armour (new aircraft, etc) is being delayed bc we're spending too much time trying to make sure that the jobs created from the project are perfectly distributed between 3 different states, that's not efficient. There will be another project where you can equate the jobs disparity, but there won't be an opportunity to bring ppl back from the dead. So efficiency 1st, the rest 2ndary.

Ever since Dave came on the podcast the first time I’ve always wondered when the next time American war fighting planes will be engaged in dogfights with another nation like we had in Vietnam and WW2. Like Dan briefly eluded to, its gotta be either Russia or China, whether that be 10 years or 40 years from now. It almost feels like technology is trending in a direction where it’ll make that part of combat obsolete as decision makers would rather drop bombs or fight head on in an unmanned drone than duke it out 1 v 1 in person.

Fascinating podcast, especially since I have seen the movie, Top Gun, about 937 times during this "stay at home" order. By the way, the Naval Aviation Museum is amazing, but you have got to get to NOLA to see the WWII Museum. You will need 2 days to see it all.
