I knew and chilled with DeVante and became his barber while he was in studio mode in Mammaroneck, NY round 96-98ish. He introduced me to MC Hammers and I “CUT THE PERM OFF HAMMER,” My momma didn’t believe me, so I told her to come with me n introduced her to DeVante n MC Hammer, and she called both of them by their government name!!! Both of them were cool as f***!!! I met DeVante while I was buying cigars n he was trying to find. I gave him everything I had but one blunt worth, he tried to give me $. I told him “You know how much pu*** I got cause of your music, how much more Ima get just for talking to u!!! I gave it to him and wouldn’t accept anything for it! My boys was ready to fuck me up all night! The very next day he was looking for me and brought me to the studio and we became family!!! Whenever we saw each other the very first words out his mouth was “How’s Ma, she good, she need anything, u good!!! I love that brother, I’m secure enough wit mine that I don’t even have to say “No Homo” after that!!! One of the truest/genuine/realest person I met, celebrity or not!!!

devante fascinates me. What God has given to him reminds me of how God blessed the handsome King David and his son King Solomon in the bible. My two favorites. David was an obedient, pure hearted child who played musical instruments and danced just to praise/please the Lord. Soloman was a righteous young boy who asked God for wisdom and that pleased God so much, God gave him that and more. David had a heart after God and Soloman was the wisest and richest man in the world at the time, both got caught up in a life of sin. David did repent and remained righteous through out his life and God blessed him with a long life. even tho he did see struggle. Soloman strayed from God and start messing with witchcraft. Soloman fell into a depression and later lived to regret his empty pursuits. He came back to God and wrote the book of Soloman and proverbs and psalms too, I believe. the point of the story was God blessed two great men with great abilities and both sinned because they both fell weak to lust/women but what God gave, no one could take. the devil tried but fail. Devante is a child of God and reminds me so much of someone who's blessed from the bible. I hope he knows that. Soloman did state that with much given, much is required but if God gave it to you. He know you can handle it. I wish the entire Degrate family generational peace, love and blessings. same to the beloved haileys who have voices like Angels made to praise the Lord. lol I'm rambling but it's Sunday and I'm on my way to church and this was on my heart. tell devante I love him.

Devante Swing is one of the few music artists in history that is able to find and nurture talent. I put him in the same lane as other talented male and female producers and songwriters in history like Barry Gordy,Stevie Wonder,Babyface,Jimmy jam and terry Lewis,Missy Elliott,Timbaland,Mariah Carey,Smokey Robinson,Paul McCartney,Elton john,Madonna,Janet,Prince, Michael,Burt Bacharach, Diane Warren,LA Reid etc all these people are great songwriters,musicians and producers in their own right and he deserves to sit with them. I wish that he had better guidance back then and help to grow and build the brand he wanted. No telling how big of an impact it would have had in the industry if he was able to turn his label into a ‘Bad Boy’ ‘So So Def’ or ‘Death Row’ type cultural phenomenon.

I remember wanting to produce at the age of 19 and had a Yamaha keyboard with the 4 yellow sample pads that sampled about 2 seconds. One day in my room while trying to make a song on this keyboard, a video came on. Four young brothers my age were on there singing a song called "Forever my Lady" and at the End one of them started vamping out on a keytar straight jamming. MY mouth just dropped. I've never seen someone be that cool and young in the forfront of a group jamming. Prince had that whole feminine looking young prodigy genius thing going in the 70s, but DeVante was cool gangster with it. I was never the same as an artist.

I was in Japan when Jodeci came out. I was baffled by their popularity, as the only music, i was really into was pop, classical, new wave, rap and stuff, so it seemed ok, but i just wasn't fond of it. But when i was in, maybe 6th grade, and my friend's sister was listening to it. She was trying to get nasty on me, so naturally, i let her. By the end of that session, i saw the magic. The lyrics, the harmony, the emotion it made people feel. For the next 2yrs before i came back to America, i thought that the world would end, if i didn't either, hear or hear OF Jodeci. Totally agree he is one of the most talented ever, the only reason he isn't recognized so by more people is because of him not releasing much material after the 90's, compared to producers/artists like Dr. Dre, R.
