Unless you're living in one of the evacuation zones, businesses will continue to function. This is a fire and not an earthquake, hurricane, or tornado. If you live closer to Downtown Los Angeles, Internet cafes are an option and so are motels. They are better options than one of the designated evacuation zones if you have a few bucks to spare. I've been spending most of my last three days days at a local mall because they have massive air purifiers that my house doesn't.

I don't know if he knows, there are actual news outlets, reporters, broadcasters, news vans, heck people with drones, and helicopters, and police officials, ALL MONITORING the fires! Sucks even more with insurance companies pulling out of states like California and Florida, so not only is your house destroyed but you also either don’t have insurance or you had to pay way more for the government sponsored insurance meant to be used as a last resort, that also covers less than a normal insurance policy would.

Passports are easy to carry, hard to get back if lost, and incredibly valuable if sold on black market. Depending on the country of origin for the passport. Desperate people and people unscared of risky behavior are great thieves. So while normal people run for shelter, they leave a home unattended and with most valuables intact, which means it's a perfect target for burgling. I'm not sure about US passports as I'm not from there, but a mere Swedish passport can be sold for ~$25k to criminal organizations, which I'm guessing US passports can match or exceed.

As someone who has been in force-of-nature danger it sounds like joking to lighten nerves and not at the suffering of others. Making terrible jokes is my way of coping. They may not currently be in danger but with the way they're talking about leaving anyway, they're already nervous about things going bad. Now if they were absolutely not affected I would agree it's not appropriate, but it is affecting them and they do seem to be anxious.

It's actually really normal to joke in serious situations like these, it's how people cope. A lot of their friends are affected, and it's obvious they're worried. They're literally debating if they should evacuate or not.

As everyone else has said, saying this to someone who is out of danger (like, someone in the east coast or on another state and beyond) makes sense, but Jodi, Scarra, and John are actively trying to debate evacuation plans in this video. They're allowed to joke about it because they WILL be in direct danger if the fire spreads even a day more.

I think there is no need to overthink about this. They are still indirectly affected by it, but they are at risk. They are probably on their toes, waiting for what's to happen next on their area. They are joking about it because they are making it light for themselves. They want to show their audience that they are fine right now and that there is nothing to worry about. I think that's what is happening.
