"The accused" It's really heavy, but it can't be compared to the heaviest movie I've ever seen: "Boys Don't Cry." I'm sorry I watched it. " The accused " is nicer and less heavy (at least for me). "Monster" with Charlize Theron is also a difficult film.

Spot on Man. My exact choice. It was a strong year in which even Melanie Griffith was at the top of her acting career. I wanted Sigourney to win because her portrayal of Diane Foster is so heartfelt and so surrendered. But then there was Glenn Close with a performance to top that of ALEX in Fatal Atraction (In my book, right now she would have 3 awards: Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons and Albert Nobbs). Everything in that performance is ferocious, even when contained, I would say better when contained. And you have to remember that the las 2 minutes of the movie belong to her. And then Meryl in her Cannes Win Role that shows she doesn't want to be loved, she wants to do the best roles in the planet, and she does. With an Australian accent, and a unique performance, she shows us what it is to be the best. Melanie went outside her comfort zone with Working Girl, giving heart and soul to many of her previous and future sweet and sexy characters. But then Jodie Foster left them all sitting there, as she not only goes through the trauma of multiple rape, but also confronting social stereotypes. Jodie had always given us spectacular performances in Taxi Driver, Bugsy Malone and many more. She is incapable of being excellent. She can be romantic, commanding, a bad ass or a rookie and she will make you feel exactly what it is that is going through her mind and soul. No matter how many Oscars they've won or lost, they have already left their imprint in the art of performance.

Agree with you Alex. Turner's monologue at the beginning of The Accidental Tourist is mesmerizing. Actually I believe there was a controversy with Gina Davis' nomination for The Accidental Tourist. She should've been placed in the Best Actress category. It was a bit of hogwash that the studio advertised both her and Turner for the best supporting actress category. Gene Siskel pointed this out during his Oscar surprises of 1989 broadcast. You can find it here on youtube. I believe he referred to it as category fraud and argued that both Klein and Davis were not true supporting roles, hinting he wanted Turner to have the Supporting Nomination. He was always a huge fan of Kathleen's and even expressed bitter disappointment when she wasn't nominated for Best Actress for War of the Roses the following year.

Jodie Foster is an actor of exceptional talent, depth and beauty who was always ahead of her peers, by the time actors of her age were in their diapers she was making commercials, by the time they learned to speak, she was making movies for Disney, by the time they starting going to the school, she was winning awards and getting nominated for the Oscars, by the time they decided to enter films, Jodie decided to leave it behind and enjoy the ivy league world which she graduated with magna cum laude, by the time her peers had their breakthrough she already had won two Oscars and transitioned to the director's chair. An extraordinary talent, who's contribution to cinema is unparalleled and exquisite. A sheer gift to the world of acting and filmmaking

I think that main reason why Jodie got the award is because she made revolution in film history with this movie,it's the first movie which spoked abouth rape,at least in this brutal way, plus the contrast of the character,on the one side she was extremely seductive confident woman,on the other hand in that courtroom scene she looked and sound like scared 6 years old girl,I don't think that any other actress displayed vulnerability in such a beautiful way.

The Accused is an amazing, powerful drama with one of the greatest female performances in the history of cinema. Foster has never even had an acting lesson, she's just so natural and humanistic in this role, she excels at playing the role of the strong-minded yet physically vulnerable young woman with a raw intensity. Every scene she's in exudes realism, hope and courage which most deservedly won her the Oscar that year, nobody else came close, they weren't as fearless or truthful to their roles

I watched this film again tonight for the first time in many years. Jodie's performance is stellar, and very deserving of the award that year. At this time, she had to fight for the role and only got it when Kelly McGillis was hired as she was much more bankable than Jodie at that time. I read that Jodie first thought her performance was not good and that she should reconsider what she wanted to do with her life if she quit acting. The great reviews for her performance surely helped her confidence, and then the (first) Oscar.

Foster won her first Best Actress Oscar in this fact-based story about a young woman, brutally gang-raped in a bar, who has the courage to go after her attackers and those who stood by while it occurred. As Sarah Tobias in The Accused, Foster is rough, boozy, drug-addled, and unwise to the machinations of the legal system. But she's also stalwart and unwavering in her pursuit of justice for the violent degradation she has suffered. Say "goodbye" to teenage Jodie Foster. In The Accused, Foster is all grown up, steely-eyed, and brimming with rage. She's also as wounded and helpless as a blackbird that's broken its wing and fallen into muddy soil. Already the victim of a horrendous sexual assault, Sarah is victimized again as she takes the stand during her rapists' trial, painted by the opposition's attorneys as drunk, promiscuous, and "asking for it." Foster's performance on the stand, struggling to maintain her dignity and composure as the fury within her bubbles to the surface like burning magma within a volcano, is extraordinary.

@westnyacktwins Well, Jodie's career fizzled in the mid-'80s, and her wins for "The Accused" and later "Silence Of The Lambs" basically put her back on the map. Jodie’s date was actor Julian Sands who has been missing for 13 days while hiking in Southern California's San Gabriel Mountains….I hope he gets found !

This WAS a close, tough year as all the nominees were great, the Top 3 of them being 👌 this close - pun unintended - together. I've always loved Jodie Foster, and when I saw this great film (The Accused), I had a good feeling that she was going to - at the very least - be in the running for the Best Actress category. As much as I was happy for her to win near the end of the decade that started with her name being linked by a murderous madman to the attempted assassination of a newly-inaugurated President Of The United States, I really feel that Sigourney Weaver should have won, while Glenn Close should have absolutely won for Fatal Attraction the previous year. Now, it's 30 years later, and neither actress has STILL won an Oscar. It just goes to show you: Hollywood doesn't always fix its fuckups.

i really dont think people like Weaver and CLose really care about a stupid award which pits 5 totally different performances against each other, its a ridiculous award...CLose has won TONY Awards which are much more esteemed....

Jodie Foster??Are you kidding me?? Glenn Close's performance in Dangerous Liaison is one of the best performances EVER in cinema!! She was beyond ROBBED!!

Sorry but everyone knows Glenn Close deserved to win here. Massive mistake from the academy - She was nominated 5 times in the 80s alone - She should have at least 2 already. But she remains incredibly respected among her peers, doesn't need a bullshit trophy.

No way. Jodie and Sigourney were better than Glenn in 1988 but in 1987 Glen should have won, not stupid Cher

Jacqueline Lane I know. I love Jodie foster and her work in The Accuses, but Glenn was the outright best in this category and was also the favorite. I think the academy sympathized with Jodie's character more than Glenn's.

Josh Ricketts i sadly have not seen Glenn Close's performance in that movie just yet. its on my list. im going back through some of the classic female best actress performance (Woman Under The Inflance with Gena Rowland is next) to see what I have missed over the years but Im sure Close's is amazing and if she was the favorite this might have been an upset. I saw The Accussed many years ago and its hard to watch due to its content and knowing the fate of the women in the years to come, but Jodies acting was amazing and worthy of winning. All I could put it down to is that they give it to the younger up and coming actress over the move experience. Im thinking Hillary Swank over Annette Benning or Jennifer Lawrence over Jessica Chastain, doesnt mean they are less deserving... just in my opinion i felt age help in these cases. It doesnt often happen in the male lead acting category (Eddie Reddmaine is the youngest to win at age 30 but its not uncommon for a female to win in her early 20s). Anyways its a real shame someone as amazing as Glenn Close doesnt have an Oscar. Does she at least have an Emmy for her work on that show Damagers? I only watched one season but god she was good in that too.

Jacqueline Lane yes she does!! If I remember right I think she has 2 for damages. I loved The Accused and thought Jodie was great in it, but I just felt after 4 previous nominations for Glenn, it would've been nice to see her win:) Glenn's performance is more emotionally driven while Jodie's is more physically driven with the rape scene. Both are great performances!!

I don't agree. Glenn should have won a year earlier for Fatal Attraction. In this year Jodie Foster and Sigourney Weaver were the greatest

I've just watched movie with 30 years of delay lol Gosh it's been 30 years. I'm 26. Film is older than me. God I'm getting older too. Anyway, I'm so impressed by her. What an actress. She lived her role. Completely stole the movie. But i couldn't take my eyes off of the attorney. What a beautiful woman i said lol

What's interesting is to see how diverse the performances nominated in this category are, this might be a call between Jodie, Meryl and Glenn but Jodie gave the most powerhouse and courageous performance, she earned it 👍👍👍

@cuteNADA1992 How was Jodie an unknown? She had an Oscar nomination under her belt before anyone knew who the other four were. I mean arguably Melanie was knocking out films the same time Jodie was but she didn't become a name actress until the 80's. Then you had the the whole assassination attempt on Reagan thing...that kinda put her on the top of the pop culture radar. If anything she was the old pro of the group.
