Autumn at the off-grid cabin in the woods is a time I wish could last just a bit longer. The leaves are falling, the wood stove is necessary these days, and we are enjoying the days of long effortless walks in the woods.

You guys are doing great. I have a timber frame cabin that I live in year round. It is mostly heated by my woodstove. The cabin is 26 ft by 24 ft, with a half loft. Very cozy. No mice so far.😁

Found this online, Peppermint oil has had great results in keeping mice out of our RV. You soak cotton balls in peppermint oil and place them around the RV in places where the mice might go. Peppermint oil, products such as Fresh Cab, and steel wool in the small openings are all effective ways to keep mice out of your RV. Also I heard bounce dryer sheets work too.

Pure suet bricks might be a better choice, as the peanut butter ones are apt to attract squirrels. Squirrels will chew those beautiful stick suet feeders apart in minutes.

Good morning! You guys did a really nice job of clearing the property. It's looking much nicer now and it's amazing what a little clearing can do. That looks like a wonderful place to relax and have fun together. I really enjoyed your video. ❤ Have a great day!

You need a hugh tea kettle to keep on your wood heater. Two reasons, hot water on demand and to put moisture in the air.

Hi Jodi, you probably have answered this before but just wondering why you put your mattress on end when you leave? Is this to prevent mice from burrowing in your bedding? Thanks!

I've wondered the same thing. Mice can still get in even with it up like that.

We haven’t had mice burrowing in the mattress, but we have found mouse poop on the mattress. I cleaned the mattress and just didn’t want that anymore. Since putting the mattress up this way I’ve never had the same issue.

The brick in your wood stove isn’t there to radiate heat longer it’s there to hold heat in the stove so your rebuffing tubes burn the gases in the firebox to 1. Get more btu’s out of your wood and to kept creosote from forming in your chimney.

Always remember before you take anything down, get your camera, take couple of pictures, save it. My and I, did this thousands of times until we finally figured what to do. We're old and we forget and the camera helps..

Looking good 👍 to help curb the mouse issue I only feed birds in the winter. Having 50+ sled dogs I don't poison the mice a dog or wild animal can find it and eat it dead or alive and take a permanent nap. I use the old fashioned snap traps along the walls with peanut butter. I know they're expensive but one more double wall stack on your chimney will put it above your ridgeline and provide a better draft for your wood stove making it burn hotter faster ❤

I know glue traps aren't what everyone likes but its safer for your kitty than possibly accidentally poisoning. And catch and release can be done with a glue trap. Also I love watching all your videos.

I have seen some build a square box on wheels to store wood so the mess is contained in the box & not on the floor. It could be stored elsewhere when not in use. 🐭

Wondering why the cabin can’t be made mouse proof where no mice can get in. Especially on a new build.
@jodimiddendorf
@jodimiddendorf 11 ай бұрын
We use Mostly home sawn imperfect lumber. Which inherently has tiny cracks. Mice can get in tiny cracks. The cabin isn’t finished. We spray foam every crack we see, but probably miss some. Even new homes aren’t mouse proof. If you build where there are loads of mice, they come in.

Please remove all the poison for the mice before you bring your cat to the cabin. If the cat catches a mouse that has eaten the poison, it would poison your cat.

The poison is in the roof eaves and would be inaccessible for the cat.

Thanks for looking out for my kitten! But like Cory said, the poison isn’t in the cabin, it’s in the eaves, which is where we usually hear the mice at night. So the pets won’t be able to get at it. ❤️

@@jodimiddendorfI think you are missing the point of what they are saying. If a mouse (in the eaves) eats said poison, then finds it's way to a place that IS accessible to your cat (i.e. inside the cabin, or outside on the ground), then the cat eats mouse, it will poison your cat. Google "owl eats poison mouse" if you still don't understand what we are saying. Old fashion snap traps are the way to go. Poison and glue traps are inhumane AF. I understand you don't want them in your cabin but at least make it a quick death, not a slow, painful poisoning or glue trap.
