It does make the sound better! Smoother! Definitely a more beautiful sound. Ease of putting it on is nice. Just realize if you need to make a tuning adjustment, you’ll need to remove the ring and adjust the mouthpiece. Otherwise, it slides all over in your hand, but again it’s easy to put it back on. No screwing. So yea, definitely loving it for the playing experience and sound!

I just got my power ring ligature and I have to say - I'm extremely impressed. I'm a beginner sax player, with only 7 months worth of playing, so take my feedback with a grain of salt, but from what I can tell - low notes seem to come out easier, high notes sound more clear and crisp and the overall sound seems more.. meaty? Like it has more substance... I REALLY LIKE IT!! I've only tried this for 20 or so minutes and will be playing on it more later today, but I just wanted to leave this little bit of feedback, in case it helps anyone. PS. Only concern I have is that it might damage the mouthpiece over time, as it relies of friction to keep reed steady? But maybe that's not a problem? I guess all ligatures put some wear and tear on the mouthpiece.

I just got a Power Ring (HRA1) for my HR* 5M alto mouthpiece. I had the H ligature but I could never get it to secure well on the mouthpiece without it moving when trying to adjust the mouthpiece on the neck so tried a Rovner Dark ligature. It worked OK, secure but low notes felt harder to get out and I felt it dampened the reed vibrations a bit much for me. I then tried the Power Ring yesterday. I use Legere Studio Cut reeds and the ring went all the way to very close to the back of the mouthpiece barrel, almost hitting it, which seems a little far back compared to other ligatures I have used. Could the thinner table the Legere reeds have caused that? I have been told that Legere reeds don't always sit well with some ligatures due to the thinner table. I also found it a bit tricky when adjusting the mouthpiece on the neck as the ring rotated freely and the mouthpiece wouldn't move much and the ring rotating could move the tip of the reed out of alignment. Despite that, with the ring I found it really easy to play all notes from low Bb to altissimo and I got a full and even response on all registers and could play as loud or as quiet as I need without any real effort and never felt like I was going to run out of air which was great! I felt like when I used the H ligature, my tone was slightly more centered and a little bit less full than with the ring. My only issue was how far back the ring went and that it moved when adjusting the mouthpiece on the neck cork and never felt 100% secure, however when I was playing, the ring never moved on the mouthpiece, only when adjusting the mouthpiece position.
@superstyk4 жыл бұрын
Just add thin mouthpiece patches to the back of your mouthpiece and you can get the PowerRing to sit exactly where you want. I've done that on 8 different 'pieces and it works like a charm. Chuck Currie

@jodyespina82775 ай бұрын
Yes you might run into that same issue.
@dynoroad3 жыл бұрын
These things are hard to judge by a number of reasons, the number one I think being the fact that the one testing the equipment is most likely prone to expectancy bias. I think for these presentations to hold any value in terms of "sound" differences, the player needs to NOT know what ligature is being used. Looks cool though, but unless demonstrated with a proper double blind test, I remain skeptical.

I haven't tried the "power ring" yet, but I must admit to being skeptical. On another KZbin saxophone video, the presenter praised Rovner ligatures because they are flexible and have more contact with the base of the reed. I have used Rovner ligatures for 15 or more years and like the response of the reed and improvement in tone over conventional ligatures. So which is better more or less contact with the reed?

@PaddieFunk5 жыл бұрын
You have to experiment and see what’s comfortable for you and what sound you are looking for. Usually larger tip opening = softer reed and vice versa. Soft reeds will tend to provide a more spread sound with a fatter low end while harder reeds will add more depth to your high notes. These are just guidelines of course and there are many exceptions to the rule. With regards to Jody Jazz mouthpieces however, they tend to be very free blowing and so you can use harder reeds on the more open pieces without popping a vein in your throat. I play a MH on my 8 HR* for tenor. I don’t know what tip opening you are using on your SuperJet but in general i suggest playing the hardest reed you are comfortable on because that mouthpiece is very bright and a stiffer reed helps with it’s baffle. Experiment and see what you like. I play mostly straight ahead jazz and latin and looking for a darkish tone with a little sizzle, I’ve tried many reeds, definitely all the rico/d’addario and vandoren varieties plus gonzalez, rigotti and even the fibracell synthetic. I always find myself coming back to La Voz for it’s tone and sensation. Hope this helps, good luck. D

With the power ring, it gives more power and fatness to Jody's already amazing jazz sound. You're going to sound like your self on any mouthpiece you play because you will adjust. People won't hear much of a difference, but you the player will feel a difference (free blowing or resistant blowing). Brighter mouthpieces are typically more freeblowing in themselves
