This video will try and answer one of the biggest questions "Can you wait for your #1 job when joining the Air Force? I will discuss how the Air Force mission comes first, how the Air Force is a career, not a job, I will try and answer can you wait for you #1 job when joining the Air Force, I will discuss how the Air National Guard and Air Force reserve job process works, and lastly I'll discuss the nurse enlisted commissioning program. This is not the easiest information to digest, but if you all were more willing to accept this information, it could really ease your transition into the Air Force

It may not be your #1 or #10 job but do not settle on something that you will be stuck with 4-6 years that you have absolutely have no interest in. They already put money into you, it's your life, hold your ground so that you can be productive for any branch you choose and for yourself improvement if you decide to get out when your tour ends. In addition, rank matters, there is more pros than cons signing up for 6years. ASVAB scores do matter, so if you are not happy with your score, study harder, get a tutor, and take the ASVAB again. Good luck

Even though you have an AFSC, every assignment is different and your job will change enough to give you a large breadth of experience...MSgt Jody is correct, the AF is a career and one I loved...I spent 21 years Active Duty and 17 years civil service....loved my 38-year USAF career! There were assignments I liked better than others, but each assignment and job I held brought me much satisfaction.

Also, on the officer side, there are slots reserved every year for enlisted to attend the USAF Academy--USAFA never fills all of the quotas as most Airmen are unqualified due to being married or having dependents. It is easier to get into the USAFA if you are enlisted than applying as a civilian---something I learned during my career as an Education Services Specialist (Education Center).

Thanks for the Informative video, Jody! I am 22 yrs old, and I plan to start the enlistment process at the beginning of next year. My career plan is to join the air force to learn and gain experience, and hopefully, use that to my advantage in the civilian tech industry. And, as you have mentioned, I plan to provide as much value as I can from my side. So, a few questions arrive; Suppose I score high on the ASVAB and hold a certification (Security +, for example) with community college credits (although not having graduated yet). Will this give me leverage towards getting a tech job in the air force? Moreover, would these values suffice? Or, should I be patient and finish my associates (I intended on finishing my associates while in the air force)? Again, thanks for the informative video! :)

Kyle Gotts KZbin channel has a video about joining at an older age. Maybe this can help you with some questions of yours. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXa1hWqve5mInc0 My best advice is know that the young girls will most likely see a mom in you, and want you to fill that void. So be prepared for that. Also, it seems like the older applicants promote pretty fast compared to younger people. Not because the Air Force promotes older people faster, but because you all are usually more mature and know what it takes to move through the ranks quickly.

If a recruiter offered you something outside of the job list you created, you can deny that and wait all you want, unless you needed a waiver or something. However, if you’re booked a job you listed, and then say no I wanna wait, that’s when it becomes a problem. It sounds like your recruiter offered you a good job that you were interested in and took it. Getting a guaranteed medical job is like winning the lottery. Lol.

I agree with others, this is dumb, so basically if you have interest in a couple jobs or field, you’re screwed. Can’t list all those jobs in that field, forced to put jobs down that you aren’t into for your top 7-10, then at the luck of a draw, you have to HOPE that 1 of the 10 jobs that’s picked for you is something you want. And let’s say 3-4 jobs of the 10 are the ones you even want…. So now your stuck for 4-6 years doing something you hate

It’s very tough to say, because the demand for jobs changes constantly. I swore in two weeks ago. My advice is to take as many specialized tests as possible. Try to be prepared for the cyber and networking test that you’ll take the same day as the ASVAB. Take the EDPT and DLAB too. Keep your options open. I got a 98 on the ASVAB. My top two job choices (fusion analyst and RPA sensor operator) were on the first job draft a week later. I didn’t get either of them! Luckily I got a 131 on the DLAB, so my recruiter gave me the choice to wait two months until the next draft and risk not getting something I wanted again, or opting in for a cryptologic linguist analyst position and locking it up. Options.

Jody, of course, I want a medical job (4J0X2-physical medicine). I also have a degree in exercise science, a certification in exercise physiology, and work experience that's not completely parallel with physical medicine but there is overlap. I want to do my job in the AF because obviously I don't want to pay for school and the training to me is top notch, more wholesome, and diverse than the civilian world. I eventually want to do physical therapy in the military. I am mostly sold on enlisting rather than commissioning for a PT career because I know it's a very specific occupation and there is risk in thinking I'll get it right out the gate with my academic profile. I can always try to commission later too. I've found 2 other jobs I'd be cool with doing in case I can't get the 4J0X2 occupation. Is this a common medical occupation like the others you speak of in the video? What's the likelihood of getting my top choice considering the overlap of my current qualifications& experience? I'm still watching your playlist "For Officers" to really see if I want to apply to OTS. Will be seeing and office recruiter soon. Thanks for any comment on this.

You’re definitely doing the right research. 💪🏽💪🏽. You’re definitely the type of applicant which has leverage. What I’d recommend if you go enlisted is to ask your recruiter if they can do a “competency booking”. This basically means you’re exceptionally qualified and they might be able to reserve a medical job for your education and skills background. You’re also correct about the health professions world. That degree has one job you can do in the Air Force “Aerospace and operational physiology” but it usually only hires one person a year. 😩. So the enlisted route may be better, or just a normal officer job. Just keep doing your research and I’m sure you’ll make the right decision. I do want to extend a congratulations to you, just for getting this far. I love to see people like you doing great stuff, and trying to be even greater. Respect. 💪🏽💪🏽

@@Jodywithawhy Thanks for the affirmation 💯. Glad you brought up "competency booking" because my recruiter has mentioned it. I'll be asking about the monthly common jobs on my next visit. If I don't, when is it too late for me to walk away?
@Jodywithawhy
@Jodywithawhy 3 жыл бұрын
The competency booking comes with a job and a date. So if you were hoping for a competency booking, your recruiter would basically take all your certs and give that to their leadership. The leadership will search around for any jobs matching your qualifications. If they find it, you’ll have a job and date upon them finding something. If they can’t match you to a job, then you’ll just be waiting like everyone else does in the delayed entry program. Waiting for a job that you listed while at MEPS. Keep in mind, even though you are exceptionally qualified you’ll still have to list 7-10 jobs just like everyone else, however they’ll try and match you to your top 3 because of your qualifications. Once you swear into the delayed entry program and list all those jobs, you’re basically telling the Air Force you’re willing to take any of the jobs you listed. So I would recommend not to go to MEPS if you’re not okay with that. Because in an event you don’t get the job you wanted most, and you walked away it’ll be a waste of everyone’s time. So know the different scenarios and be sure this is what you want before you go to MEPS. I hope this helps. Good luck. 💪🏽

Any Cyber job would be a good start to cyber security especially ones that require you to obtain security+ certifications. For cyber surety you have to study under the general section not the electronic section as much. If you score a 64 in general you automatically qualify to be considered for that job. ESP considering that tuition assistance won’t cover any classes outside of your current job field or scope ie. If I accept the crew chief job as cool as that may be I won’t be able to utilize the tuition assistance for medical/biomedical courses. Why wouldn’t it be better for everyone involved for the people who know what they want and why they want it to be patient long enough for that opportunity to open

Also considering that person having an aptitude for something else would be taking the job away from someone who is better suited. Which isn’t in the best interest of the AF; And if the argument comes down to “he had it on the list” my recruiter told me that I must have atleast 5 jobs from the high needs list, meaning that there’s a potential that people might feel obligated to comply and put things that they have no interest in which I’m sure isn’t in the best interest of anyone

Reserve, Guard and Active Duty all have enlisted jobs. Each component has their own separate needs and job availability. Guard and Reserve can show you what they need right now, and if you qualify you can pick it. Active Duty makes you list 7-10 jobs, then they try and match you to a job as the jobs become available. I hope that makes sense.

They are guaranteed, but they are guaranteed for the dates on the contract. "Why are you trying to do this job in the air force and not somewhere else?" Because the air force is paying you for the training. Not only do you get the training free but they are paying you to train, plus all the other benefits that come with the air force compared to doing the job as a civilian. The answer to that question is common sense. I don't even know why you asked it.

@@Jodywithawhy *Important question* How often do you get in Linguist Jobs? (Airborne and Ground) I'm trying to go in for one of those as my #1. Another thing, I scored pretty high on the ASVAB. (M:83 A:90 G:89 E:84 I should be able to select from any job, right?) My recruiter gave me a list of jobs I qualify for, but it seemed small compared to the total number of jobs air force offers. There was only about 60 jobs on the list (about 8-10 of those he list as jobs they never really get in. I didn't care anyways because all of those jobs were medical and I don't want anything medical related). He says some aren't showing up because there is other test to take to qualify for them. But that is only about 4, right? Because I need to take the DLAB and EDPT. Why is the list so short? Also, is there any jobs you'd recommend. I'm interested in tech/math jobs as my background is in mechanical engineering. So far I plan on putting Linguist and Computer Programming after I take those two test. Please let me know. Thanks!
@Jodywithawhy
@Jodywithawhy 2 жыл бұрын
You might have a smaller list because of your physical at MEPS. Your physical and ASVAB combined dictate your job qualifications. Linguist jobs are very common and yes you do have to take the DLAB in order to qualify. I would definitely recommend you look into mechanical jobs if you have an engineering degree. Linguist is an awesome job too, if you can qualify for it. 🤙🏽
