On the last day of the NATO summit, US President Joe Biden confused the name of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi with that of Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. During a speech on the Russian war of aggression, Biden wanted to hand over the floor to Selensky and said: "I now hand over the floor to the President of Ukraine, who has as much courage as he has determination. Ladies and gentlemen: President Putin."
Biden realized his mistake even as he turned away from the lectern and immediately corrected himself apologetically. He explained that he was so focused on defeating Putin. Selenskyj, who was standing next to him on stage, jokingly countered: "I'm better."
The incident occurred under constant scrutiny, as Biden's mental and physical fitness was called into question after a TV duel against Trump at the end of June. Despite the mishap, the first two days of the summit went almost without a hitch for Biden as host. Biden's biggest blunders usually happen when he is speaking freely and not reading from a teleprompter.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who was also on stage watching the scene, commented matter-of-factly: "Slips of the tongue happen." He emphasized that this did not change the content of Biden's speech.
However, the real test for the US President is still to come: on Friday night, Biden will give a press conference at the end of the NATO summit.
US journalist Erik Kirschbaum comments: "Most Americans are thinking: This can't be true!"
