Joe always comes across as so likeable and amiable. I really wish Atlantis had been able to go longer with his effort to buy the rights.

Lovely to hear about the friendship between the two guys and loving Joe's fond memories of Jason and his love for his friend. Really also love Joe's appreciation for the work they did and how it touched fans' lives so positively.

Safe to say that off-screen partnership also blossomed on set too. Made for some great performances together in Stargate Atlantis 👍

I can't believe it's been 20 years since this show has been on the air, and I still miss it! This franchise (as a whole) helped me get through some rough patches of my life, and I'm very thankful for it! Hell, I even grew up watching MacGyver (the GOOD one) with RDA, and I hope to meet RDA one day so I can tell him that his show got me interested in STEM!

When you have series like SG-1 & SG-Atlantis that you can involve yourself with these remarkable characters that you think of as family, friends and people to look up to that create a positive aspect in your life. The world needs heroes a great deal more than most of us realize. I for one was glad these series are here to relish and admire.

Love this! IMO Joe is a criminally under appreciated actor! (Not by us❤)

The visual / physical symbols, patterns, & motifs in all of SG are amazing too - just the decor on the gates alone, especially the milkyway gate, is amazing (lotus & papyrus plants, chevron shapes, triangles, pyramid shapes, and the caustic (light reflections) patterns on the puddle when the gate is open, etc.

My exposure to the Stargate franchise was through Stargate Atlantis. I caught glimpses of SG-1 on TV, but easily ignored it, thinking it's just some boring shooting sci-fi glorifying the US military. But SGA wasn't like that in the first place, so I watched it and loved it. Then I told myself I should check out SG-1, out of curiosity. Oh, man... I love these two shows. Too bad SGA didn't get more seasons. At least with SG-1 you can say that it had a good run and accomplished a lot, but SGA could've easily grown into a lot more. Still, we got a lot more than Firefly.

This reminded me of how Section 31 movie hit flat, and could of have been better. Touching on the reach of Sci-fi across cultures boundaries is good.

I take it you didn't like Section 31 then? I haven't seen it yet (so no spoilers please) but I also don't know if I can be bothered to watch it. I like Michelle Yeoh but beyond that and it bearing the Trek name, nothing else seems interesting about it. The premise of a Section 31 movie/series was intriguing but the trailer really doesn't seem to capture that.

@@Elwaves2925 Discovery didn't feel like Trek ever... I watched Section 31 as if it wasn't Trek, and had a good time. Just get into the mindset that modern Trek ISN'T Trek, then it has a certain charm if you get into it in the first few minutes. Michelle Yeoh chews the scenery nicely... but no, it ain't Trek.
@Elwaves2925
@Elwaves2925 3 күн бұрын
@ I disagree that modern Trek isn't Trek (at least not all of it) but agree that Discovery was about as far removed from it as you can get. I only really got something from seasons 2+3, the rest was bad (season 1) or bland (season 4 onwards). Thanks for the tip though, if/when I do watch it I'll ignore the Trek part and watch it like it's other sci-fi.

@@sarek8472 Cheers for the reply, I appreciate it. That's two who got something out of it so I'll give it a shot myself. That DS9 essence was what I was hoping for but I guess that was too much to expect.

Love how he describes both Joseph Campbell's breakdown of myths, I remember hearing on the radio show Ground Zero that George Lucas had read Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myth" before making Star Wars and used so many of the archetypes in the franchise. It makes sense that both "Star Trek" and "Stargate" would appeal to so many people because they both represent so much and can show how there's a brighter future when people actually come together, even if that's not what Joe's talking about. If describing a circle as being one of the most basic symbols and the idea of a Hero's Journey as 'circular' it might be akin to the basic form of language that everything has a pre-cultural root that spans cultures, religions, and languages to the point they're practically universal.

I got into the Stargate mythology late in the 4th season of Atlantis. I had watched quite a bit of SG1 when it aired, but SGA awoke me to the entire universe EXCEPT Stargate Universe, which did NOTHING for me. In fact I've only ever seen the pilot episode. l came to love what each character brought and how they changed. I'm on my 4th rewatch of Atlantis as we speak S2 Ep 3 Runner. Like Joe I'm a native Californian, but just recently moved to Prescott, Arizona

There is nothing more powerful to us human beings that a really welltold story and music. The proof of this claim comes in the form of Religion. No matter how absurd the claim of a divine existence is to me, for other people it is something they would die on that hill to protect. To me though, it is just fiction and really good storytelling. All stories have an ounce of truth to them, what that truth is however, some of it is subjective and some is not.

A story yes, religion no. Religion is just mind control and manipulation due to a weakness. People want a family, or something great 'looking out for them", or something they fear "i dont want to go to hell".

Log out, Meredith, we know it’s you! Just kidding - loved Rodney’s character in the SGA. And now that you pointed it out, I understand you’re right. Sheppard and Ronon were great, but a tad generic and cliche, but Rodney was always unique and believable.
