Hill wrote lyrics to salvation army tunes because the corporations would pay the salvation army to sing next to strikes to drown out the speakers. So with Hills lyrics the whole strike would sing their case along to the hymn, people on the street would hear their message.

Hollywood would never dare to make a remake of this one.

Joe Hill was executed 100 years ago today, one of many labour organizers who were killed by the American state in those days, but one who survives through his own music (songs such as "Pie in the Sky", "There is Power in a Union") and this powerful song by Alfred Hayes and Earl Robinson, which was popularized by Paul Robeson.

Brilliant! Always relevant. And, because we need him now, "I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night, alive as you and me...."

I loved this film -wish I could find a copy of it. Thommy Berggren was great as the lead actor in this film and also in Elvira Madigan.

I saw this movie back in the seventies while in Israel. I sure wish some producer and director would make another biopic of Joe Hill. they could use William Adler's account of Joe Hill, the trial, his legacy and the IWW to guide them along.

I have been writing a song about Joe Hill recently for a project and in my research I discovered that there is a decent bio-pic about him! Huzzah! I am excited to see the film. Thank you for posting this clip. This is my favorite song of his.

It was fellow worker Haywire Mac who first performed Preacher and The Slave out in the streets of Spokane.
