When this video was in heavy rotation on MTV in 1983 I was literally sleeping on a barroom floor. By a crazy stroke of luck some friends dropped me off at a bar I never would have gone to. Sitting at the bar was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen. We ended up shooting pool then leaving together and the story began. I didn't have two nickels to rub together, but she saw something in me. I'd watch this video and fantasize about taking her out and showing her the night she deserved. Lots of stuff happened between then and now. We never stopped loving each other and never lost touch. Finally the stars aligned and I was going to move south so we could do the things we'd talked about doing. I came down for my interview the same week she was being diagnosed with cancer. I moved to FL in time to support her through her illness. She's been gone over four years now. Thanks for doing this song Jamel.

This is one of those forgotten gems! This song was released in August, 1982. The music video was recorded around the same time. It was shot in one night at the St. Regis Hotel in New York. I was 11 years old when the single was released. I actually thought recently the housekeeper was portrayed by a young Julia Roberts. I'm wrong. Steppin' Out had a different meaning back then. It meant just going out and having fun and enjoying yourself. I must admit I've done karaoke on this song with a shipmate from Great Britain. I was stocked to see people actually dancing to this song at the bar we was at.

I never would have expected a reaction to this song on KZbin - especially not these days. I'm even surprised people remember it & have even recommended it. In its day, it seemed to me like a song that many were likely aware of, but maybe they didn't know they were aware of it. You'd probably hear it in restaurants, elevators, and malls, but you probably wouldn't find that many that would wear Joe Jackson T-shirts, or sing it aloud, when it was on the radio. It was catchy in a different way, than something like "Our House". Still, I think it's a hidden gem, for those that find it, remember it, or have rediscovered it. A good companion to this is the song "Breaking us in Two", which also happened to make it to MTV in video form. I am glad to find out that other people have remembered this song.

Further reminding me how most local radio was always better than my city of Montreal. CHOM FM was the only Rock station, and from 1982 onwards, it just got worse as it played more 80s crap, and less of everything that came before. I stuck with records and tapes, and knowing when the better late-night DJs came on. Radio was the BEST when I would travel down to the US. Other than that, it took a University station called CKUT until 1987 to finally come into existence and provide me with LOTS of new musical choices! Joe Jackson is a master musician, songwriter, musical stylist, performer, and educator. If you ever manage to go one of his concerts, he will spend time between (and sometimes during) songs describing the creative process, and musical theory behind the performance. He has been working since the 1970's and he continues to make wildly creative, tuneful, but uncommercial albums. His fans, and he has many worldwide, are fanatics, and for good reason. .

I was a teenager when this was released, and remember this video from MTV. I always liked the song, but I have come to appreciate it more as I grow older. The whole "getting old before our time" going along with the man & woman in the video dreaming of the life they wish they could have...it resonates. I love the driving rhythm & piano, too.

Love your enthusiasm towards the different styles of music we grew up with. Even us hard rockers appreciated the talent and writing of a lot of 70's & 80's artists. We could go from Aerosmith to Ambrosia or Zeppelin to Box Scaggs. Talent is Talent. Keep doing what you do, we love it.

This 80's music goes straight into my soul and makes me feel like ran into my first love and was left speechless at the very sight of it, you just made my day with this reaction. Please react to "Head Over Heels" by Tears For Fears, the true meaning of 80's music is in them or can also react to "It's my life" by Talk Talk, Mark Holis' legacy, of course there's more from him but this one is a good, awesome start.

Joe Jackson was right up there with the likes of Elvis Costello during Punk's New Wave in the late-70s to early 80s. This is much more pop-oriented, but he's written nocturnes and other classical pieces, and his album of jive covers (Joe Jackson's Jumpin' Jive (1981)), is well worth looking up.
