This must be one of the few instances in music where the live version is ACTUALLY better than the studio version. The strength and the sheer push this performance has is nuts. First time I heard this cut in the radio I could not fucking believe it. 10 points.
@plenzmeier755 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The guitar work is AMAZING
@humbertholloway77015 жыл бұрын
Frankly, this version is just vastly different than other live versions....not necessarily better. It features the guitar out front and Joe's synth lead.....but my counterpoint would be ….where is the brass, acoustic piano, bass in the physical sense or in the mix? Not there. Joe and his players are outstanding musicians but each tour was different, featuring different arrangements, and they will appeal to different folks for different reasons.
@Lunatic4Bizcas4 жыл бұрын
@@humbertholloway7701 : Yes. I prefer the complete album version; however, this performance was so tight and nothing short of phenomenal.
@johnmaer4 жыл бұрын
@@Lunatic4Bizcas You might look around on YT and try to locate another live performance of track at this same time with his mainstream players at the time. It was incredible and featured the brass, the great Vinnie guitar work and his impeccable bass player as well, and Joe's signature vocal delivery and horn work.
@Lunatic4Bizcas4 жыл бұрын
@@johnmaer : Indeed. I'm quite familiar with that performance as I've seen it time and again. Truly impeccable . That video truly highlights Jackson and his complete band at the top of their game.

Tom Teeley's touch on guitar here is exquisite. The vibrato chords, the arpeggiated chords, the riffs...all wondrous and influential on my own playing.

I remember I heard this version about 20 years ago on the radio and loved it, despite not knowing who did it or what song it was. I spent the next 10 years trying to google and figure it out until one day I'm in IHOP with my (now) wife and we hear the studio version on the music in the restaurant. I finally put 2 and 2 together and figure out it was the live version that I had heard. She laughed and said "You really didn't know who that is? Thats Joe Jackson!" I felt like a fool but was extremely happy to finally find the song I had been looking so desperately for. Thanks Joe!!

Joe Jackson is such an incredible Musician, singer, song writer, arranger that in my eyes he can do NO wrong. And while I admire the many directions that he can take his songs during a live show (BUT,) I really prefer the version with the brass section right up front. It gives the song a much more Jazz tone to it. Plus IMO a ggod strong horn section can raise the band's level of performance by a factor of TEN. Easily!

Finally. I had the live album with this very version on years ago. It introduced me to this tune, and while the big brass version is good, this one with Tom Teeley's ripsnorting guitar on is the one that for me is the best. I've looked for this before on YT and only now have I found it. Thanks

Thank you of roosting one of my fav live Joe Jackson songs. Shazam! It's one of those unusual cases where the live version is better than the studio take. Always suspected on the audio that the guitarist had broken a string but looks like the hand held keyboard was an intentional solo? Love it when the guitar comes back into solo with Joe together they drive that message home!
