I hate how Joe is always downplaying himself. He doubts his talent and skills, he downplays the horrific bullying he has been facing for months. Being humble is one thing and I love him for this and think it's rooted in his upbringing, but his self deprecating jokes, all keeping inside to himself isn't the solution to the negativity surrounding him. Nevertheless, he continues to shine so very brightly.

He is working with two exceptionally good tenors, Aaron Tveit and Nicholas Christopher, I'm sure both of them are more than happy to help. I somewhat think Nicholas kind of reimagined Sweeny, he is Pirelli/Sweeny standby and his Sweeny isn't as much about vocal accuracy but more about emotion, and the whole cast seems to be doing that now.

As a former kid on broadway(Sutton of all people was my “star to be”, iykyk), I love seeing a breakdown of Joe’s vocals. I was honestly blown away! I’ve gone back and forth whether his first “but in time” is a choice or not. His mix voice is SO SO GOOD that I’m more inclined to think it is a choice, but no matter, I can’t wait to hear some audio further down the road to see if it evolves. It shouldn’t surprise given his acting abilities, but the amount of emotion you can hear in his voice is stunning. There are so many amazing singers out there, but when you’re able to convey the amount of feelings he does it’s next level. I thought it in jest the first few times listening to his voice, but I legit think he could be the IT broadway star. Moveover Aaron T, Jeremy J, and Jordan F, Joe Locke is “taking over Broadway” lol

Joe Locke is the perfect example of a absolute mega star who only is with us purely by luck...he always had the talent it was simply fate that gave him the opportunity. Had his sister it was i believe had not told him to read Alice's comic novels, and even more coincidental that he was made aware of the open calls for the part of Charlie, the world would have been deprived of this awesome talent. It is our absolute privilege to be able to experience his awesomeness....and I frankly believe that had Joe went into politics he would have made a PERFECT ambassador to the UN from the UK...period!

I am in awe.. Loved Joe before because he does a really lovely portrayal of Charlie in Heartstopper.. But I did not know he could sing like this... He said in some interview that he wasn't much of a singer, i believe.. but this voice? This voice just doesn't happen by chance. You hear that he has technique.. you hear that this voice HAS trained for a longer time, you can't just get there in six month unless you are really freakily talented. I have to say that when I heard he was going to do this part I thought it was just a producer choice to get a known name in order to draw audience. Gaten was that type of choice even though we have known for a long time he can sing. But Joe? They clearly knew something we didn't... I will happily follow him because his future IS in Musical theatre, clearly! He almost has a lyrical tenor sort of voice and he will break hearts on Broadway and West end... Just think of him as Marius in Les Miz in a few years time... or Dear Evan Hansen?.... the list goes on.

He's certainly got the youthful look to play a kid. He has great dynamics! I actually liked the contrast in register on "but in / time".

It sounds greats but it’s a change in dynamics that I don’t think was a choice for anything but how hard that navigation of the passagio is.
@hollymcl10 ай бұрын
Oh, I do think it's a choice, and I love it! The softer, lighter voice on the first "time" is SO GORGEOUS and it's made more so by the contrast with the crescendo on "but in". Maybe there's a bit of strain on the word "in", that could be improved, but the dynamic contrast at the top of the phrase is *chef's kiss* FWIW I'm an American choral singer. A soprano. The phrasing there is *goals*.

Hi Jackie !! Thanks for this !! I dont know anything about professional singing... When I heard these audios today I was speechless. How can he sing this way, just like that ??? It´s incredible !! I didnt expectet that... Unbelivable beautiful !!!

Natural talent mixed with a good teacher as a kid I’m assuming. Seems like he was involved in community theatre so I’m assuming he’s has some coaching. Then he would have definitely had professional coaching since landing this role to prepare for the 8 show a week schedule that’s required on broadway. But basically he’s just very talented.

Very talented !!! Thanks for the explanation 😊💓

Thanks so much for sharing your insights about Joe's performance. You highlighted how much of a star Joe is. I was a little nervous also to read reviews of his performance and am super happy that he knocked it out of the park. We love you, #JoeLocke ! 🌟 BTW, Jackie, I totally agree with what you are saying about the American vs. British styles of musical theater singing techniques... I prefer vibrado over shouting any day. and I'm an American.

@@kaotsuka I ended up seeing the show in March when I was in NYC. There wasn’t much I liked about this production of one of my favourite shows but Joe was absolutely out of this world. I’m really hoping we get a London transfer so Joe gets the chance to reprise his role.

This was great! Vocal gymnastics is a fantastic way to describe Sondheim ❤ Because of Joe I finally planned a trip to NYC to see as many shows as i can in 4 days. Already have my ticket to Sweeney - one month and counting! Look forward to listening to the 2012 version - I haven't heard that one and I've loved this show for ages.

It’s a fantastic recording. Imelda Staunton as Mrs Lovett was just incredible. I don’t *love* Michael Ball as Sweeney as I like Sweeney to have a rich Baritone voice personally but he was great in the role.

Nothing will ever hold a candle to the original, which I saw three times in my teens as far as the production or the recording. But Joe Locke is amazing. He's a supernova. Touting the 2012 production as the benchmark is incorrect in my opinion, on so many levels.

What a pity the show is not in the UK as us Brits could then go and see/hear Joe, but I'm sure we'll get that chance in a future production somewhere this side of the pond.

As a singer yourself (with a lovely voice I might add), your familiarity with show music gives you permission to rave about Joe Locke's performance! It's wonderful he's been given the chance to show his versatility. I'm old enough to have seen Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou in the original production - it sure takes stamina to get through it. My fantasy scenario: A future Heartstopper scene when Nick is going through a difficult time and Charlie sings 'Not While I'm Around' to him. Get the Kleenex out!
