Who cares if he’s not playing stadiums today, because he did it all already. Modern bands will have the same fate because what’s “in” in the music scene is constantly changing. Grand Funk Railroad were bigger than Zeppelin for one year in 70’ and sold out the Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles, yet now they play smaller venues nowadays. That doesn’t discredit the success they had. Music has just changed.

Saw JLT about 8 years ago at a small venue in Farmingdale, Long Island. He gave his all and his voice was still great. White Lion was on the bill with him. I believe their original vocalist was still with them at the time time, but not Nuno Bettencourt. Many of these artists tour Eastern Europe where they still have a fairly strong following. Rave on.

I’ll never forget watching this documentary and JLT says that he wasn’t going to be singing of Ian Gillian’s “drivel”. I’ve hated him every since. I love his voice but making a stupid statement like that.... well Mr. Turner, there you are, struggling through a song from an album you had absolutely no hand in making. You’re in some small venue …and singing the great Ian Gillen’s drivel and believe me, he will never sing anything off of one of your albums.

@jujuinspace9638 Жыл бұрын
Well said Mr. Clark !! They aren't professional musicians, ok they may get paid which technically makes them professional. But as a band they can't play it. No dynamic content. I'd be so embarrassed after a comment he apparently has made then can't even come close to expert arrangement. Guitarist misses so much, keyboards don't and anything. As musicians will tell people. You can play a chord, say in 4ths but backed up with the keyboards, it adds the missing notation which creates power, movement and look at that, I've not even mentioned the vocals. I'm sure he's lovely human being but( as I've never listened to his other stuff) this is a Very poor performance. Perhaps too much for his range and just ego makes him want to sing it. There's a time signature change through out a lot. But come on Mr. Turner, I'm sure you can do better than that. Stop trying to sing like Ian, you can't but I bet you can do some kicking stuff. You ever want a guitarist that can play message me. Or get a better guitarist and keyboards. Keyboards yes, should have a Hammond sound which, come on all those modern keyboards can emulate. By the way this i Not ! a slagging off message but encouragement. Stick to your vocal range. I bet you've got great vocal ability. We can't all have 4 octave range and I'm never going to be, and I'm going to say Richie but can't stand the banjo player, So Steve Morse or even the new Mr. Mcbride( who is very Richie in style) One last point. What ever you think of Ian, fair enough but the reason it works is because of the whole band. He's is in my personal view an amazing singer. Maybe he can't sing like back in the day but he doesn't have to, he's 76, I think( should really now family birthdays) He's relaxed and Deep Purple have got better and better and still touring world wide. First time I've watch it( the video) and admittedly because of the comment. Mr.Turner you can do so much better and have im sure . Why you're playing with most of these musicians is intriguing. Don't get.

Good performance, but it's kind of sad to see these kinds of longtime veteran rockers having to return to playing all the same small venues that up and coming players trying to make it start from, simply because their old school style of rock isn't relevant anymore. If all was right with the world, a lot of these dudes would still be playing arenas or large theaters at least.
@timetraveller93212 жыл бұрын
You mean like deep purple are or iron maiden, or whitesnake etc etc all still touring in 2022?
@bozeeke2 жыл бұрын
@@timetraveller9321 that's only a few notable exceptions. A good 75-80% of 80s rockers (and even a lot of 90s) can only fill up small venues nowadays.

This reminds me of a beautiful thing that Leonard Nimoy’s child said in a posthumous documentary about their father. They said, essentially, that Nimoy would literally take any paying job acting or doing voiceover, to provide for his family. He swallowed all his pride and burned away his ego in order to earn a living within his craft during the lean years between Star Trek gigs.

I wonder if Ian Gillan could do as good as Joe Lynn Turner on this song now. Such a weird song, always wondered what inspired the unusual arrangements.
@WilliamsDad19892 жыл бұрын
Even Gillan , (who's much older), who doesn't have the voice he used to, sounds multiple times better than Joe's failing voice. Joe's was 4 years ago, Gillan's was 2. My opinion - Gillan wins easily. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYfRmZilhLWCeJo
@godetonter47642 жыл бұрын
@@WilliamsDad1989 Ian Gillan is better than almost anyone, he invented what almost every Heavy Metal Vocalist did in the 1980s. No one ever screamed like that before him . Yes Joe Lynn Turner is just a Power Pop AOR frontman, not an innovator , just a follower . But my whole point was what a strange song Perfect Strangers was . The chord progressions, the lyrics. It has a real supernatural atmosphere to it . Not an extremely difficult song to sing though . I would love to hear Joe Lynn Turner try to sing Child in Time , or Speed King
@WilliamsDad19892 жыл бұрын
@@godetonter4764 Sorry, got confused as to what your 'whole point' was based on the 1st line of your comment. " I wonder if Ian Gillan could do as good as Joe Lynn Turner on this song now." And personally, I don't give Joe a bit of luck with Child. He could Joe scream his way thru Speed. Don't get me wrong, I liked Turner with the rainbow stuff he did, and some of his other projects. But he can't sing anything like he thinks he can ( or could ). I always thought Joe could've done something like Foreigner after Lou quit. ( And no, I'm not saying Joe was as good as Lou was - Just thought his voice could've worked 25 years ago for that. )
@godetonter47642 жыл бұрын
@@WilliamsDad1989 I agree with you, and I liked Rainbow with Joe . Joe Lynn Turner is like Sammy Hagar, and Derek St Holmes. A high thick Voice, but not really a harsh intense screamer like Lou Graham, or Graham Bonnet. I think Joe would have done pretty good on something like Feels Like the First Time, or Urgent, but I just couldn't imagine him doing Juke Box Hero, he could have probably hit the notes, but it would most surely be less intense than Lou Graham. It's similar to imagining either Joe Lynn Turner, Sammy Hagar, Derek St Holmes or David Meniketti singing for AC/DC. They could all sing the songs, but would surely sound less "in your face " than Brian's delivery
