Joe Mazzula, NBA coach, sees no correlation between leaving his lone big man in a perimeter iso situation, with 3-out shooters, and Capela crashing unimpeded, over and over and over and over and over again from tip-to-buzzer, with the Hawks getting so many offensive rebounds. Instead that's just somehow on the players rather than his lack of adjustments.
@doogie0926 ай бұрын
This is why I as a Celtics fan think Joe will be our downfall. He freezes in the big moments, not calling timeouts, not yelling at players to speed up, calling the same old tired Tatum iso when has it EVER resulted in a successful outcome? I can’t remember the last time Tatum has been a true closer. He is supposed to be First team All-NBA, which I do not agree with, but he is not overly clutch & definitely not a closer. Joe needs to turn to others and decoy Tatum. The KP play was also to Tatum via a cut, fortunately KP got it to Brown & he did what Tatum hasn’t. The coach also played around with KP switching onto Murray. First time, swish. Second time, swish. Then he allows a third time, swish. I get u have to try things, but after a 30 point collapse and a tough NOR team coming up, a switch sooner was appropriate. White, Jrue, Brown would all have been better & once they did they got a miss. Afraid this coach’s 6:19 overconfidence, downplaying, or is it arrogance will cost this team when it matters most.

@@CoffeendonutsI miss Marcus calling him out lol. Remember how we turned the playoffs around? It was when the team said FUk off to Joe and he was forced to listen. I swear everyone forgot that when they were down 3-2 to Philly, reports came out that the Celtics wanted to go with the defensive finals appearance lineup with Rob starting all year, but Joe wouldn’t do it. Then he was forced to, and the players loved it, and Marcus and some sort of made it public that we wanted to do this, we know better than you, and you have to listen now cuz you’re fired if we lose this series. I also felt like the same thing happened in some way when they fought back from 0-3. I can’t remember quotes or details exaclty, but I’m pretty sure that was also the players themselves coming together and blocking Joe out and just digging in together on defense. All of this makes me think this is why Joe is the way he is in the pressers: and why any of the stars on the team haven’t wanted him fired: I think the students are running the class. I’m pretty sure they only want him around because he has NO authority over them. It might be subliminal, but I think they know if they keep him around, all he is is a face on Tv and they don’t have to be held accountable at all. It’s sort of like…like he’s their trainer. Or he’s some assistant coach who gives them some advice about how to score more, and then can take it or leave it. It’s really sad and pathetic. The good thing, or brifgt side? Lol? Is that at least the players can still just ball the eff out possibly and just overcome not having an actual head coach. BUT, Im not sure if there is more than a .01 percent chance they can beat Denver without a real, and elite, head coach :/. Seriously Joe is so pathetic. I dont think the lack of adjustment is a big issue - the C's are not playing meaningful games, Hawks are in a dog fight for the play-in, I am sympathetic to Boston just wanting the Hawks to give up and go away, and impressed that the Hawks refused. Very little of what happens over the next several games matters other than practiciing situational basketball. And I genuinely think the C's were fine with Murray taking a bunch of contested jumpers to close out the game - he shot even worse than he normally does, and his 3's alone kept the C's in the game a few times when I thought they were really checked out. That said, Tatum has absolutely no reason to keep taking these shots. He has an astonishing amount of evidence that going 1 on 5, one touch to jumper, doesnt work. Like, anecdotally, or statistically, it's a major component of the games the Celtics manage to lose - and there arent many of those, so it really stands out! C's have 16 losses, by a total of 123 pts. That includes the 33 pt laugher in Milwaukee in January, which accounts for more than a third of the points they've lost by! It's one of three double-digit losses on the year. And Tatum dribbling out the clock before taking a terrible shot, having done nothing - no screen, no movement, nothing but waving everyone out of the way - is the crucial play at the end of most of them. I think Mazzulla's coaching has been excellent, all year - the C's system is complex, everyone on the team in thriving, and they are so far out in front of the league it's been silly. But this thing, this concession to Tatum's vision of himself as a closer, is a genuine problem. I suspect everyone knows it, like, in the locker room, but it's not easy to get any star - let alone one who credits Kobe as his inspiration to succeed - to sacrifice that big moment. I hope it's not something that continues when the games matter, it wastes a lot of effort from everyone else.

Tatum and Joe are the only two who can get in the Celtics way to win a title. Neither is good enough right now to win a championship. Tatum has been disappointing all year, especially in the clutch, while Joe is innovative and a stat nerd except for when it comes to the only part of the game that matters. Tatum CANNOT be given the ball in crunch time and make things happen. He has no iso game or bag whatsoever. He is INCAPABLE of scoring at will in crunch time. Run a damn play. I see NCAA teams with better late game execution than the Celtics. I have been a Joe fan all year, but if Celtics don't win a title, I want him gone. Celtics need a coach who refuses to treat Tatum as superstar royalty who deserves the last shot exclusively because he's supposedly the best guy on the team. If Derrick White or Al Horford got the last shot instead of Tatum in games Celtics loss by less than 3, Celtics would have 3-4 more wins this season. It's only because of the predictable easy to guard Tatum isos that the team is so shitty in close games. Tatum being the bum of the 4th quarter is literally a meme now. The average casual on Twitter has a more realistic understanding of Tatum's clutchness than his damn coach.

@cparksaffluent6 ай бұрын
Funny you say that. Idk about a championship but when we were playing poorly during this game heading into overtime I just said to myself, "They deserve to lose this game because of him". I still want us to win a chip. If we do, its in spite of him.

Joe's my guy, but he's gotta take ownership of this loss, and I'm sure he'll look back on this and think bout what he could've done. That foul by Wesley Matthews they had to give with 6.7 seconds left in the 4th was the perfect opportunity to use your timeout and draw up a play.
@jsintral6 ай бұрын
Not joking I literally think he doesn’t know how to. I remember Brad was the best at drawing plays up in clutch time. Mazzula has all that talent and his best move is for Tatum to dribble dribble and take a dumb step back shot😂
@Beantown-ww1cr6 ай бұрын
When the game was 112-109 up 3 joe mazzulla should have told the players and the players should know foul send them to the line they might miss one but worse scenario they make both but you didn't give up a 3 and your still up by 1 with the ball and they can dribble it out in regulation or they foul you because they dont want you to dribble it out and the players just make there free-throws game over

Now I understand the last shot. Just give JT the ball and have him make a great play. That is brilliant, especially when JT sucks at it!!!!

i think Joe is a good "systems" coach but not a good "reaction" coach. he just cant react fast enough to things like Murray (hawks), Dean Wade (Cavs), etc taking off in the game to score 20-30 points.

Mazzula is made out of glass. He cannot take criticism or tough questions. He accepts no accountability and tries to say we played a great game defensively? This guy needs to go. He should have got the axe last year after losing to the heat in the ECF

The point is the Boston Celtics need a defensive stop and a defensive players.30point deficit and the back to back losses.
@BenWick-oc8pv6 ай бұрын
I know that if you blame the bad calls from the Refs when you lose you are a whiny little princess. However there were three teams out there and the officiating team was clearly the worst. I want Mazzulla to be shown the movie Hoosiers and get thrown out of a game to make a point for the future

Once again this team fails in a crunch time situation. Love Tatum, but he is not a closer at this time. They have giving him multiple chances while other very capable shooters stand around. He wastes time and tends to settle for his fall away which I cannot one he has made in recent memory. Glad to see JB get the chance on the broken play in OT & he delivered. This coach talks a good game, but the results r not instill playoff confidence. If the C’s hit 20 threes, no problem. If a team limits that or they r just off, they struggle. I love KP, but he cannot handle physical centers, he gets pushed around & doesn’t act like a 7’2 or whatever player. He’s more of a forward, a finesse player, which is fine, but this team needs physicality for the glass. That is Horford & Tillman. I get Tillman got smacked, but Joe keeps him on the bench when they r getting killed on the boards. Love Kornet as well, but he is limited offensively & gets overwhelmed by talent. Bench player at best. I am a Celtics fan and they have had a great season so far. But, even with different pieces, they r showing similar weaknesses as last years playoff collapse. Too much passivity on this team, & from a fan perspective, Joe still seems to be learning, appears to be indecisive in 5:29 key moments and then downplays outcomes. I get u have to temper & balance that, but this team may prove to not be ready yet for the biggest stage. Assuming they are they, anyone see this team beating Denver???
@agentstiles6 ай бұрын
Denver is definitely a big step ahead with the best player and system. Celtics cannot beat them in the clutch and will have to shoot well in the series to win...which is possible but tough to do in a long series. In a must score scenario the celtics don't have one and revert to bad tatum iso 3s which is mind boggling with endless options and teammates who can shoot/score from anywhere.

The reporter asked the right questions that needed to be asked. If Joe can't handle tough questions, then he shouldn't coach the team. He needs to stop deflecting and take some accountability for his team losing two games in a row to a sub 500 team.

This is the NBA folks. 82 game season. Way too long. Atlanta likes beating Boston. They put everything into that at home. What does it mean? Nothing really. Boston is trying only to be top team. They won’t risk playing with playoff intensity this late in the season. There will be more games like this before the playoffs. But, it really means nothing. I’m not sure Porzingas can last the whole playoffs without getting injured. Tillman, Kornet and Horford will be key. I think the Celtics not playing Queta is going to be a huge mistake. He needs reps and confidence and he’s been given neither. Springer could help with his defense, but he’s another one not given minutes. What about Jrue? Can he last the playoffs? Big mistake not integrating Springer and Queta into rotation pieces. They had alot of time and didn’t get it done.

My observations are just things I saw, not to give excuses to Celtics as their efforts clearly were not even close to 75% on D. The Hawks clearly wanted more, & a good game plan to guard the 3 point line where without Young they seemed to have picked up their D. Refs did let Capela hold players off the screen up top. I think this is good practice as they will see a lot of that with Adebayo in playoffs with the guards and Butler where the refs tend to let it go. Mazzulla was clearly trying different stuff & line ups. The Celtics were also quite allergic to really attacking the paint even though they had reasonable number of FTs (avoid injury?) Tatum was doing his stagnant ISO thing again and I'm not sure if it's done intentionally to practice or forced into it by Synder's game plan. He's always been a good coach. Verdict: If they have no other ways but go ISO both times against the Hawks in the end, they'll not make it past 1st round
