Joe List & Raanan Hershberg are talking movies again. This time it's all about Beantown (with a few digressions). We trash 'Good Will Hunting' and explain why it's shit. We debate 'Mystic River' and rank our favorite Boston set movies. It's all fun. Raanan's mom interrupts a couple times. Subscribe and enjoy! Farts!

Really enjoying these, Joe. I initially bristled at Raanan’s sentiments regarding Good Will Hunting, but then I started to reassess it in ways I hadn’t thought about before. Still love it, but I appreciate challenging my own opinion. Would be interested in hearing you both talk about notable examples of your opinions changing on movies over time, for better or worse. I recently watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for the 4th time. I was crazy about it in the theater, and I’ve enjoyed it less each time since.

Loved listening to this episode. Gone Baby Gone definitely got Boston right. There are things in there that only someone from Massachusetts would think to include. I was a bit late to seeing it, and it is Boston before my time, but The Friends of Eddie Coyle is an outstanding Boston film (requires a little patience though). I love the Departed but it also feels like Boston cranked up to 100 (it is self-consciously Boston, almost a parody of Boston at times), through Martin Scorsese's New York eyes. Agree it is a bit of a comedy. Also some of the accents are outstanding, some are bad but interesting to watch. Shout out to Shutter Island for turning Nahant into an asylum. On the accent, it is a really hard one to do. I grew up here, but spent five years in California as a good and mostly lost my accent. Sometimes it unconsciously slips in. But I can't affect a Boston accent consciously, even though most of my family has heavy Boston accents. Got to the 1:13 minute mark

Excellent pod gays. As a fellow Bostonian I loved this. For me Id rank them Gone Baby Gone, Departed, Mystic River, Good Will Hunting, the Town. Joe how do you feel about Boondock Saints? Set in Boston but mainly filmed in St Louis?

I grew up on Good Will Hunting and it was one of my favorite movies, and I still really enjoy it. That being said, I can’t argue with most of their points. And I do wonder what I would think if I saw it for the first time at my current age of 32. Cause how they feel about it is very similar to how I feel about Queen’s Gambit (which everybody seems to love). It was fine and enjoyable enough to watch, but it was a lot of pandering nonsense. Anyway, keep these pods coming!

Completely agree with Joe about Sopranos. I’ll take it a step further, most prestige HBO dramas are wildly overrated. To me, they tend to be super cheesy and often dull. I tried The Wire and couldn’t make it past a few episodes. Too many European actors doing bad Baltimore accents, melodrama, and a who-cares plot.
